    Etymology

    Cereus is a Latin adjective meaning waxen, wax-colored, or supple. As a noun, it means candle. Since certain cacti looked  something like candles, they were placed in a genus called Cereus.

    The prefix hylo- comes from the Greek word hýle. Hylocereus does not necessarily have a mixture of Greek and Latin in its genus name, because cereus is related to the Greek word kērós, which means wax.

    Hýle can mean a forest, a wood, or timber. Plants of this genus are not very woody, so the meaning forest" is probably the correct one. If left unchecked, the rampant growth of some Hylocereus species would result in a sort of spiny forest, but I do not think
