Spice of life

From flavouring and preserving food to healing wounds and mummifying Egyptian royalty, spices have a colourful history. And research continues to reveal more about the properties of spices and their ability to improve the overall healthiness of our diet.

Spices are aromatic vegetable substances in whole, broken or ground form whose primary function in food is seasoning rather than nutrition. They are derived from the seeds, roots, berries and bark of plants, unlike herbs, which are the leafy portion of aromatic plants.
