About this ebook

It's time to talk back.

The generation born into evangelical purity culture has grown up, and many have started families of their own. But as time goes on, it's becoming more evident that many still struggle with purity culture's complicated legacy—its idolization of virginity, its mixed messages about modesty and lust, and its promise of a healthy marriage and great sex for those who follow the rules.

In Talking Back to Purity Culture, Rachel Joy Welcher reviews the movement carefully, examining its teachings through the lens of Scripture. Compassionate, faithful, and wise, she charts a path forward for Christians in the ongoing debates about sexuality—one that rejects legalism and license alike, steering us back instead to the good news of Jesus.

It's time to talk back to purity culture—and this book is ready to jump-start the conversation.

Overstated and well past the time to discuss. Beating a dead horse. This book would have been appropriate in the 00’s, when purity culture needed a hit. Now, we have young ladies attending church in crop tops and people don’t flinch. People have stopped being so concerned about girls and purity- finally- it’s become a matter of both genders! As a product of purity culture in the 90’s, I am confident in this opinion. Sorry? Don’t waste your time unless you want a brief overview of what life was like for those of us who were treated this way. Praise God, someone finally realized women can be something more than a sex object to “avert eyes” from within the church. And that men can be distracting to women, too. And that porn affects both genders. Purity culture died. Either tell this as a history lesson and stop pushing it as a current narrative of the church, or take a deep look into the church you’re going to and run to another one that is actually biblical.
