I AM WRITING TO COMMEND Steven R. Stotelmyer on the article “McClellan’s Supply Crisis” in the June 2020 issue. His article is an exceptionally well-researched, legitimate, and rarely seen defense of the general. Different, against-the-grain perspectives like this are why I cherish this magazine so much!
I would, however, like to respectfully make a counterpoint. The serious shortages of supplies, food, clothing, shoes, and shelter that so hampered McClellan’s forces were the same issues that Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia dealt with routinely. Yet they were almost always a force to be reckoned with. Lee’s suffering men fought the Union forces at Antietam nearly to a draw, despite the fact that McClellan
