    The title of this book is The History of the Pledge of Allegiance but you cannot separate our flag and the national anthem from this history. The information provided in this book will be about connecting the pledge to our flag and our national anthem. The
    Information provided in this book is interesting one to say the least. Some facts provided in the various chapters have some surprises many of which were not widely known or taught in our schools or at least I did not remember them. The pledge is a significant part of our history and needs to be a part of our educational institutions at least grade school through high school. One particular fact is information about who wrote the initial version and his purpose for doing so. To my knowledge this information was never taught in our school system or at least I do not recall it being mentioned. Also to my knowledge it is not today nor is the history of the Pledge of Allegiance. It is part of our history and should be included in any history class. This book will cover what the Pledge of Allegiance represented in the early days of our country through research. Also to be covered is what it represents today including laws that have been created regarding reciting this pledge.
    Learning about the history of the Pledge of Allegiance should be a part of our educational system especially at grade and high school levels. The pledge is an important part of the history of our country and should be taught to stem the tide of the current culture regarding it. We as individuals should honor the pledge and what it represents. It is a disservice to those who have fought for our country and have either sacrificed their lives or have been injured serving our country. Those who have served helped us to keep the freedoms we have safe from those who would do us harm.
    The comedian Red Skelton performed countless recitations about the Pledge of Allegiance. Below are the words that he put together.

    I - - Me; an individual; a committee of one.
    Pledge - - Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without
    self-pity.
    Allegiance - - My love and my devotion.
    To the Flag - - Our standard; Old Glory ; a symbol of Freedom; wherever she waves there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts, Freedom is everybody's job.
    United - - That means that we have all come together.
    States - - Individual communities that have united into forty-eight great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose. All divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that is love for country.
    And to the Republic - - Republic--a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people; and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.
    For which it stands
    One Nation - - One Nation--meaning, so blessed by God.
    Indivisible - - Incapable of being divided.
    With Liberty - - Which is Freedom; the right of power to live one's own life, without threats, fear, or some sort of retaliation.
    And Justice - - The principle, or qualities, of dealing fairly with others.

      Introduction - The approach of this book is about presenting factual information about the pledge that many of us may not know I know that researching information for this book I learned much about the history surrounding it.

      Chapter 1 - History The chapter is about the history of the Pledge of Allegiance and the original purpose. The pledge we have today is not the original content. There have been many revisions over the years and the one thing that was amazing about the whole thing is who originally wrote the pledge and the purpose he hoped to achieve.

      Chapter 2 – Reasons to Respect the Pledge and Our Flag

      There are a number of reasons to honor the pledge and many if not all of them will be recognized in this chapter

      Chapter 3 – states requiring pledge of allegiance

      This chapter is about the requirements of honoring the pledge of allegiance and the states that have some kind of recognition. In addition it is also about states that have no requirement or that have voluntary recognition.

      Chapter 4 -What it represented yesterday

      The information provided in this chapter is about trying to understand what the Pledge of Allegiance represented when it first was created. It is also about what it is and should represent today.

      Chapter 5 – What it represents today

      The importance of the Pledge of Allegiance cannot be understated in the world we live in today. Regardless of the issues surrounding honoring the pledge it still deserves respect. The information present in this chapter will substantiate this fact.

      Chapter 6 Legal Challenges

      There have been many legal challenges to the Pledge of Allegiance and there are many examples that will be provided and discussed. One of the problems to be discussed is the removal of the Pledge of Allegiance from schools and sporting events.

      Chapter 7 Adoption by Congress

      This chapter presents an interesting fact about the pledge and the recognition by Congress in 2016. The information surrounding this adoption begs the question why the pledge was not recognized much earlier based on the amount of time it has existed.

      Chapter 8 – The military and the Pledge of Allegiance

      The connection to the Pledge of Allegiance and the military will be discussed in this chapter.

      Conclusion

      This part is a summary and a conclusion about the pledge associated with the information provided to bring about a better understanding of the pledge and its importance to the history of our country.
