Descripción

Creating art is a revolutionary act of resistance. Reframing the destructive narrative that the black man is one- dimensional and monolithic is paramount. This deeply personal collection of poems pushes against societies stifling vice grip on the Black experience by giving the reader an authentic glimpse into the thoughts, fears, accomplishments, wishes, hopes, and struggles of the beautifully exquisite Black man.

Forward

Creating art is a revolutionary act of resistance. Reframing the destructive narrative that the black man is one-dimensional and monolithic is paramount. This deeply personal collection of poems pushes against societies stifling vice grip on the Black experience by giving the reader an authentic glimpse into the thoughts, fears, accomplishments, wishes, hopes, and struggles of the beautifully exquisite Black man. Readers are taken through a literary workout as they think deeply about the intricacies of Becoming and the depths of Black Love. Consuming these poems give the reader a courtside view of the power of self-reflection and vulnerability. Portland’s inner city, front porches, basketball courts, hospital rooms, and the halls of academia provide the backdrop for the son, brother, uncle, nephew, teammate, frat, educator, husband, and father to speak their truth. Read deeply. Think deeply. Breath deeply.

Audre Lorde reminds us that, …even the form our creativity takes is often a class issue.

[Poetry is an inherently personal and economical art form that requires the least amount of physical labor from the artist and reader. The heavy lifting is done instead through the heart and head analysis of each poem.]

—Dr. Tanika Marion, wife, mother, daughter, sista, feminist and professor.

Sketch

It’s just a sketch—

nothing more,

nothing less.

A sketch of life,

an outline, a draft, a plan

to be drawn in the sand

of a man

who in the beginning

didn’t have a plan,

but sought to expand,

his mind,

his kind,

and especially those who

weren’t primed

to shine.

I live in Anticipation

I live in anticipation for the next,

the next thing,

next event,

next moment,

next inspiration,

next motivation,

the next me.

I live in anticipation of growth,

setback,

railroad tracks,

maps that lead to the facts—

facts of life,

facts of strife.

I live in anticipation of change,

change in my brain,

change that will strengthen my frame—

frame of life,

frame of you…

or of me.

I live in anticipation of greatness,

never fakeness,

surrounded by witness,

witness of mine,

or even the divine.

I live in anticipation of what’s yet

undefined.

Legacy

You’re my legacy, just like I’m my father’s legacy, good or bad, you are the seeds that will inhabit the earth with destruction and or beauty, but don’t just be my legacy, be your own legacy, live by your own rules, create new rules, live your best life.

We have given you the tools to be, so be, don’t look back, but pull forward, you are the ones who will make the day, who will make your way, don’t be the prey, be the predator, don’t be the rock, be the water, I was the rock, but you can go much farther, go go go flow through the creeks, the valleys, and
