The Seven Principles of Effective Leadership - Kwee Choo Ng
(INC.)
Preface
This book on leadership is a slightly revised version of my talk given at the National Community Leadership Training Institute when I was its Director from 1988 to 1990.
I have given this talk more than 100 times to over 5,000 participants, both in Singapore and overseas. The attendees ranged from student leaders of secondary schools, junior colleges, polytechnics to the National University of Singapore, as well as the community and youth leaders, and public servants in Singapore.
In my talk, I shared with the participants seven principles that would enable them to be effective leaders and in turn, enrich their life and make a qualitative difference in their life. These principles are not meant to make participants wealthy, but they would certainly bring riches to their life.

The Eagle Principle
VISION
I call the first principle that will help you be an effective leader, as well as enrich your life, the Eagle Principle. The pictorial representation of this principle is an eagle soaring high up in the clear blue sky. From the top of the world, the eagle has a commanding view of the earth below. It can survey as far as its eyes can see. The vision the eagle has of what lies ahead is clear and unobstructed. Hence, the Eagle Principle = VISION.
In life, you must have a vision.
(Proverbs 29:18)
I am not saying that without vision, you will die physically. That is not the point I am making. However, without vision, you will die intellectually, emotionally and spiritually.
Vision is a spark that ignites, energises and lights up your life. It encourages and inspires you. It motivates and sets you on fire. Vision gives your life a spiritual and metaphysical dimension: A sense of loftiness and grandeur. It gives you the feeling that you are on top of the world. No wonder a poet proclaimed:
(William Cowper)
Yes, if you have a vision for your life, you can’t help having this majestic feeling that you can reach out for the stars, this glorious feeling that you can roam the depths of oceans and this wonderful feeling that you can conquer the whole world. Having a vision brings out the best in you in your
