About this ebook

Covering a windsurfing competition should have been a breeze for reporter Meg Reed, but with a killer in the curl, she's headed for rough waters…

Hood River in the Columbia River Gorge is the windsurfing capital of the world, and Meg is stoked to cover the King of the Hook event for Portland's Northwest Extreme magazine. Before the competition gets under way, Meg has a chance to try some windsurfing on her own. But when the current sweeps her downriver, she spots a body snagged on the rocks. The dead man is Justin Cruise, aka Cruise Control, a celebrity windsurfer and not exactly a nice guy. It's soon clear his death was no accident, and Cruise had no shortage of enemies. As Meg dives right in to discover who wiped out the windsurfer, she'll need to keep her balance--or she too may get blown away.

We’re off the mountain, out of the snow, and it’s on to the Columbia River for Meg in this third book of the Northwest Mystery Series. Loveable and naïve Meg finds another body and what’s a girl to do? Try to find the killer, of course. Will she and Matt ever take their attraction to the next level? Will Jill ever totally get over Will (the snooty attorney who was cheating on her)? And, of course Gam, that feisty 70+ grandma, finds herself smitten by the local sheriff. Can it get any more interesting? Of course – when Dyer-Seeley is at the helm, nothing is ever as it seems. Just when we think things are going smooth, there’s another fly in the ointment and the mystery of Meg’s father’s untimely demise reappears. Is it somehow connected with everything else that’s happening? With every book in this series, Meg grows in depth – not so much we lose her quirky sense of character, but in realizing who she is and what she wants out of life. We’re left hanging – will she or won’t she move to New York for a job with ESPN? So many questions leave us hanging on the edge of our seats waiting for the next chapter in Meg’s life.

Arrggh! I love the setting of these mysteries. I like the descriptions. I like the main characters well enough. As a mystery, though, this fell short. The mystery was technically solved, but a major thread was left hanging. It didn't feel it was left hanging in an intentional way, to entice you to read the next book. It feels like the author just forgot about it. This series so far has an overarching mystery, about an investigation the main character's father was involved in. That case moves at a glacial pace, in an annoying way...basically, older men tell Meg "don't investigate; it's too dangerous for you." I think this author has interesting things to say about life right after college, and about dealing with the relatively recent death of a parent. And again, I love the NW Oregon settings But this installment of the series makes me wonder if a mystery series with stand-alone mysteries is the best format for what the author wants to say.

Kate Dyer-Seeley's Pacific Northwest Mystery series gets better with each addition! Book #3, Silenced in the Surf, is so much fun to read - entertaining as well as educational. [I am even less of an outdoorsy person than Meg, and know nothing about the various activities she has done throughout the series; nothing, that is, until I read about Meg's adventures.]

Kate has written some great characters in Silenced in the Surf. Meg is my favorite; I like "participating" vicariously through her in different sports (see above). Matt is another fave, and I eagerly await the book where Meg and Matt realize they are destined to be together. Jill is a loyal BFF. Both Matt and Jill add a lot to Silenced in the Surf, with their greater character development here. Meg's Gam always provides a touch of whimsy or zaniness. Meg's boss, Greg - I'm still trying to figure him out, so I'm looking forward to reading Book #4!

I like how Silenced in the Surf has a mystery storyline, plus there is a mystery arc for the series. It's another reason why I can't wait for Book #4, so I can read the next installment of "Who Killed Meg's Father?". Kate, write faster!
