    Chapter One

    Are You Ready For the Question?

    Debate can not begin until the Chair has stated the motion or resolution and asked are you ready for the question? If no one rises, the chair calls for the vote! Robert Rules of Order

    Hodges (2008) brings attention to the various techniques that communities of faith utilize to select their spiritual leaders. This line of thinking emerged when the likes of the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and the Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church (GOC) passed away. Their expiration seemingly made many ponder the question, Where do we go from here?

    The LDS community would possibly respond to such a question through the lens of tradition. More specifically, the LDS typically selects the longest-serving member from their Quorum of Twelve Apostles. For them seniority is established based upon their date of ordination and their choice is solidified upon the unanimous vote of the quorum (Hodges, 2008). In slight contrast, the Holy Synod (the church’s top decision-making body) elects the GOC’s top spiritual leader. The law of GOC essentially states that a new archbishop must be appointed within 20 days of a leader’s death. Successive secret ballots are held until a candidate gets 50 percent of the vote.

    The Roman Catholic Church depends upon its College of Cardinals (COC) to elect its pope. Like the GOC, within 20 days of the death of a pope, the voting members of the COC are summoned to the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican until a choice is made on who the next executive spiritual leader will be for the Catholic Church. For them, a two-thirds-plus-one majority is required to make one a pope. To dramatize their decision-making, smoke signals are used to reflect a failed ballot (black smoke) and a successful ballot (white smoke).

    The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) tries to embrace a more democratic process. Much like the U.S. presidential primaries, each independent SBC church sends a delegation to their national convention to vote on behalf of is congregation to establish their top spokesperson. On the other end of the spectrum, the Tibet or the political ruler and spiritual leader is not elected but found. The Dalia Lama is believed to be the reincarnation of their previous top spiritual leader. Thus over the process of time, senior Tibetan monks search for the child they believe to be the next Dalai Lama. Upon their discovery, the group of monks uses a secret set of criteria to confirm that the child is indeed the reincarnation (Hodges, 2008).

    Hodges (2008) asserts that while the above pathways are not flawless they have served the purpose of the various communities of faith to establish their respective executive leaders. Regardless of the method, the common denominator seems to suggest that the members tend to always rally behind their new leadership. In like manner, the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) follows suit. This community of faith, like others, has a distinctive system for establishing its executive leaders and the membership eventually accepts the same.

    As such, the overall intent of this book is to project an empirical response to the research questions, How do leaders in the AMEC obtain power? Does this method of obtaining power align with biblical principles and sound leadership theory? Are the mental models of lay leaders healthy and do they contribute to the overall success or demise of the church? Is the executive succession plan in the African Methodist Episcopal Church efficient? In an endeavor to respond to such inquiries, this manuscript will delineate a construct known as succession planning and power. In the same vein, a dialogue concerning the AMEC’s history, politics, and election methodologies will be offered. Additionally, a cursory examination of theological succession models will be highlighted. Such a process will draw attention to gaps within the literature for the purposes of moving the overall discussion forward. Finally, data analysis, verification and findings will be discussed.

    Research Problem

    In September 2002, the AMEC engaged upon a journey to reform, reorganize, and restructure the AMEC for the 21st century. An independent firm, Success Results Consulting, Inc. (SRC), led the AMEC through a two-phase juncture. The first segment embraced a two-year process known as Strategic Church Planning. During this two-year endeavor, SRC utilized a 90-member Strategic Planning Core Team (SPCT) which included Bishops, General Officers, Presiding Elders, Elders, Pastors, Lay persons and Youth.
