The Supreme Court has played a historic role in ending discrimination against gay people, most recently in a 2015 ruling that the Constitution required civil marriage to be available to same-sex couples. The question is whether the court's conservative majority, including two justices appointed by President Donald Trump, will tarnish that record by taking a needlessly narrow view of a landmark civil rights law.
