preface
When did your engineering story begin?
For most people it began when they were children. The curiosity about the inner workings of a toy, the repair and modification of a bicycle, the fascination with machines and moving parts in general. Your parents always asked you to work the TV, wire the stereo, basically, make the thing work, you could get lost for hours tinkering with something and you dreamed of one day being able to make your own go kart, treehouse, flame thrower, giant robot, etc.
My story started watching my father fix things. Lawnmowers, engines, appliances, we never paid to repair things, we just always did it ourselves simply because we could, and it was fun! I was an expert flashlight holder for many years. I could shine the beam on a bolt, fuse, or wire with expert precision and not wiggle or waiver for minutes on end! I took pride in this, it was my job.
My story is not much different than everyone else's: go to school, become interested in STEM subjects and then on to a four-year college where you graduate with an engineering degree.
At some point during the journey everyone struggles. Everyone has to search deep down and make the decision to see it through. But the important thing is that if you’re reading this, you have overcome obstacles before and achieved success. At one point you decided that you would do whatever it took to get your degree and you put in the time to make it happen.
I encountered a lot of people like me in my college classes, but in my social circles outside of that I found people who didn’t share my interests. Intelligent kids, however they would tremble in fear at the mere notion of something like changing out a water pump or the oil in their car. I took great pleasure in walking them through the entire process.
With the benefit of hindsight I realized that watching them overcome fear and do something they never thought they could (usually for way less money!) gave me a sense of joy. It was at this point that I started to realize that not only was I addicted to solving problems myself, I also found I had a fondness for teaching others.
Fast forward several years and a few children later and I found myself teaching again. This time it was my other passion, soccer.
Growing up it was the only sport I played and I became fairly proficient at it. It was my first experience with putting in the time and effort
in order to improve, but not in the way you might think. This is not some rags to riches success story, I had to learn the hard way, through failure.
Many years later in teaching my own children I realized that I never had a real soccer teacher, a guide, someone that let me hold the flashlight and showed me the proper way to do things.
With my children, I have had the opportunity to not only help them fall in love with the game but to help them seek knowledge and ultimately push past their fears and limitations. To help them do things they never thought they could. All they needed was a little time with the flashlight,
some direction, and a little push.
When they finally had confidence in their skills, and realized how well their hard work prepared them to face their opponents, it lit a fire inside them and empowered them. They became full of confidence.
The fear was gone. They realized that their hard work had paid off!
We want to bring that same feeling to you.
I want to share my journey and experience in preparing and passing the professional engineering exam. I feel like there is a lot of misinformation and fog surrounding the exam. You may be wanting to take the exam...one day. You may be on the fence, procrastinating, looking at the fog wondering how will I make the time to study?
, what if I'm not ready?
, how do I prepare?
.
This book is for you.
This book is your flashlight. We will light the path for you as we walk you through the entire process from start to finish. We will clear the fog and give you everything we know with the hopes of eliminating your fear of the unknown.
And more importantly, helping to light the fire within you. The fire that will motivate
