    Chapter One

Mat Farrell didn’t expect this to go smoothly. Hopeful? Definitely. Realistic about that? Not on his life. Recouping from an injury sustained during the line of duty while on an operation for Tungsten Protective Services, he was on leave.

Sure you don’t need backup? Co-founder of Tungsten, former Navy SEAL, and his boss, Scott Leighton asked.

The men stood outside a ballpark where Scott’s daughter played a soccer game. They were far enough away that no one could overhear them but he could still be in sight to give her his support. Not that she needed much from what Mat could see as she wove her way through the defenders like they were half her age toward the goal.

If it came from anyone who’d known of his past with Sheri, he would have thought they were being funny. Or at least attempting to be humorous. But coming from Scott, the man was serious when he asked.

No, he wasn’t sure. Backup may be necessary. Then again, it may not do any good if he went in armed to the teeth. The woman he was going to find may not be willing to help him at all. Hell, she may want to hurt him.

I’ll be fine. If it turns out to be more than this hunch, I’ll be in touch.

See you do. Scott was gone. His long-legged stride taking him back up to the pitch in time to see his daughter score.

A brief smile lifted his lips as he watched his boss, a former SEAL whistle and cheer along with the soccer mom’s who watched him like he was a treat on their menu. Mat shook his head; those women didn’t stand a chance of getting any of his attention from the woman he married. After witnessing the thumb’s up the man gave his only daughter, he turned away and headed to his Jeep.

Mat’s gut told him there was a smuggling ring going on but he had to be sure, before he called in for an op. He’d been hearing reports of missing children and he had put the area he was headed for as being the overlapping radius of it all.

He bought a ticket and packed a small bag before calling an Uber for a ride to the airport. They had to wand him but the hardware in his leg tended to set it off. He was used to it and didn’t make a fuss as they figured it out.

Once seated on the plane, beside a mother and her son who was thankfully well behaved as he read his comics and listened to something with his headphones, Mat was able to close his eyes.

Unfortunately for him, when that happened, along came the mental image of the woman he was seeking out. It didn’t matter how many years it had been, he would never forget Sheri. If ever there were a woman created for her, perfect in every way, she was the one. However, it wasn’t meant to be which was shy she wasn’t anything more than a memory and something he jacked off to in bed or the shower.

After the uneventful flight, he checked into a motel, grabbed a nap, and waited until the evening before he made his way to his destination.

I’m here. He didn’t say hello when the call
