The flickering light of the candle cast Cassia’s shadow onto the tiled wall as she hurried along the basement hallway of the large villa. Her heartbeat raced when she came to a stop in front of the head maid’s door and she stared down at the mosaicked surface beneath her feet as she took a couple of seconds to gather her composure. Being called at such a late hour came as a surprise, but it wasn’t entirely uncommon and she mulled over what she might be asked to do. There was only one way to find out for sure though and she finally knocked.

When she lowered her hand, she brushed it down the front of her toga to smooth the material in place. The uncertainty that her arrival may not have been heard welled up after a short while of waiting, so she knocked again. It got her a response this time and the door opened to the sight of a pleased expression spreading across a beautiful face.

Come in, Marcella said and stepped aside to make way.

Cassia returned the older woman’s smile as she moved forward to walk inside the room. She inhaled deeply to take in the aroma of scented oil that surrounded her and turned to watch the door being closed.

Put the candle down, Marcella said and pointed to the small dressing table against the wall.

Cassia nodded her head and walked
