About the author

Antonio Pérez Hernández (Murcia, 1989) is a Primary School Teacher, an educator and a Doctor cum laude for his thesis on An evaluation of the competence in the linguistic communication through stories in Primary Education.

He obtained an Accésit award at the Premio de Creación Literaria Nemira and was one of the finalists at the Certamen Internacional de Novela Fantástica y de Terror Dagón. So far, he has published seven books which have been translated to English, Dutch and Italian.

He currently works as a teacher as well as a writer.

My name is Hugo. I am nine years old and I have had the privilege of being a real pirate since last summer.

I am not trying to show off, but getting such a title is not that easy. It takes, as with most things in life, effort, hard work and a lot of perseverance.

But, let’s start from the beginning. When I was a little kid, I always wanted to be a pirate. In fact, my first words were not mummy or daddy, but pirate.

At school, whenever teachers asked us to draw anything we wanted, I drew pirates. I drew them with hooks, wooden legs, eye patches... and, all of them, aboard impressive ships.

Whenever my language teacher, Rocío, asked us to write up a story for homework, I used to write about pirates.

I even managed to mention pirates in my maths exams!

I am not surprised my classmates and other children at my school nicknamed me Hugo the Pirate.

Someone else would have been annoyed and would have hated the nickname... but I loved it!


What a beautiful combination of words. Each syllable sounded like music and freedom.

When I turned six, I asked my parents to get me a ship as a present instead of getting me a video game console. Of course, my parents never did such a thing. I was so adamant that I wanted a ship that I ended up without a ship or a video game console.

On my seventh birthday, I begged my parents to get me a parrot. You know, one of those green talking birds from the Amazon. But I did not get it either. They insisted we had enough animals with Poncho, our dog.
