Introduction
This book talks about getting started as a writer, creating time and space to pursue your craft and dealing with lack of motivation and writer’s block. It also looks at where ideas come from and how writers turn them into stories, choosing names for characters that are appropriate to the story, the importance of historical research if your novel is set in a different era, writing science fiction and fantasy and at the use of magic in stories for children. It examines the role of editing and revision and how to deal with what is often the inevitable process of rejection, at least until good fortune comes your way. I also recount some of my experiences with marketing and promotion, such as book launches and in-store signings, websites, blogs, and social media, and presentations, workshops and author-in residence programs at schools and libraries.
Chapter One: Starting Out as a Writer
Getting Started
There appears to be an endless number of sites on the web offering advice on writing, concerning where to get ideas, character development, point of view, working in different genres, story structure, the editing process, how to capture the attention of publishers and agents and so on. And yet one of the most frequently asked questions, especially for beginners, is How do I actually get started with my writing?
It may seem like a very simple question, but if you can’t get started, how can you ever make use of all these great tips that published writers, or at least very knowledgeable and prolific ones, offer all the time? Let’s examine some of the ways you can kick-start your creativity, then stay motivated in your quest to get your writing career not only on track, but into the fast lane as well. And don’t forget, even established writers sometimes have problems starting a particular project.
Creating the Spark
Free writing, sometimes referred to as stream-of-consciousness writing, involves writing continuously for a set period of time. Spelling, grammar, punctuation, and even a topic are largely irrelevant. Although the process may appear to result in mostly unusable material, it can help writers get to grips with their subject matter or to overcome the dreaded writer’s block. If you’re a regular writer, whether of stories for children, magazine articles, non-fiction pieces or something else entirely, you most likely already have a topic in mind. But you can certainly adapt the free writing method to suit your own purposes. It can be a good exercise to see if you can write a certain number of words in a day, but don’t be too concerned with the quality of the ideas. Nor do you need to think too much about editing and revising at this stage, since you can do that later. When you’re engaged in the exercise, the objective is to write as much as possible in the time you have allotted. You may decide to complete a certain word count completed that day or set yourself a time limit. Working against the clock may give you the incentive you need to get the job done. Writing a thousand words, for example, may seem daunting, but is very achievable. Even if you end up deleting a lot of this text afterwards, you still have the material to work on, no matter how irrelevant some of it may turn out to be. You’ll have to review the material before you decide which parts to get rid of, and in the process, you might get some new ideas for the project or take it in a completely new direction as you discover that much sought after inspiration.
In the Beginning
Even if you’re determined to work on your writing and have set time aside for it, there will be days when nothing seems to work to get you started. An interesting exercise to get a story moving is to use a collection of random objects drawn from a bag. The idea is then to create a story, in which these objects must all be used as a significant part of the narrative. For example, you could place a set of keys, a hairbrush, a pen, a cellphone, an apple, a sock, a postcard from the Caribbean, a teddy bear, an address book, a broken pair of sunglasses, a Post-it note, a watch, or indeed any collection of unrelated items in a bag. You then draw out four or five at random and use them to create your story. This type of exercise always sparks the imagination of children and you’d be surprised at what you come up with when confronted with a group of seemingly unconnected objects. You could even set a time limit to force yourself to devise the beginning, middle, and end of the story. The final result may not be bestseller material, but the process will stimulate your imagination and might be just enough to get your creativity moving again.
Kick-start Your Creativity
A great way to get started is to consider an overheard conversation and where it might lead. How about I’ll never forgive him for as long as I live
, or I didn’t mean to set the laboratory on fire, it just kind of happened
, or After that incident last year, her family will never be the same again
? Any of these could be overheard in a supermarket, at a store checkout or on a bus or train journey. You could even find a mysterious note or a cellphone with a text message containing tantalizingly vague details from someone who may be in serious danger. Maybe you receive a letter and immediately recognize the name above the return address as belonging to someone you thought was dead. All of these are great story starters, but they can also help you develop your own idea or take you down a different path altogether.
Another idea is to set up an imaginary dinner party at your house. The guests could be celebrities, movie and TV actors, or characters from books, comics, cartoons, or movies. These could be characters you like, admire, find irritating, or even detest; it’s up to you. What would they have in common? What kinds of things might they talk about, agree, or argue about? You choose the guests based on the dynamics that might occur from having them all in the same place at a truly fascinating imaginary party.
No Happily Ever After
If you don’t feel as if you can create your own story from scratch, why not use someone else’s? This is not an endorsement of plagiarism, but rather a suggestion to rewrite the ending to a story you are very familiar with. This could be a fairy tale, a real incident from history, a myth or legend, a movie or TV series - whatever you like. Perhaps the prince never reached the castle to bestow a kiss on Sleeping Beauty and wake her from her spellbound slumber. Maybe Goldilocks met three tigers in the jungle instead of three bears in the woods. Perhaps the slipper didn’t fit Cinderella when she tried it on after all. What if Dorothy decided to stay in Oz instead of returning home to Kansas?
Alternate History
The genre of alternate history is fascinating, imagining history unfolding in a radically different way, resulting in utterly different timelines, landmark events, and notable personalities. What if England had fallen to the Spanish Armada in 1588? Perhaps Napoleon wasn’t defeated at Waterloo? What if the Confederacy had won the American Civil War? What would the world have been like if the Russian Revolution had never happened? Whatever road you decide to follow, attempting to rewrite the ending to a familiar story or present an alternative scenario could take you in all sorts of interesting directions. A radically different take on familiar characters and situations, while perhaps not marketable in themselves, will help to get your creative juices flowing and perhaps serve as inspirations for your own piece of work.
Inspiration in Daily Life
Activities unrelated to writing can often unlock your inspiration, whether you’re doing laundry, walking the dog, tidying the house, mowing the lawn or doing the dishes. It’s surprising how even the most mundane tasks can launch you on the road to your next story. Consider airports, for example; there is usually little to do while you’re waiting for your flight to leave. However, you’re surrounded by many different kinds of people as they eat snacks; drink coffee; read books, newspapers or magazines; listen to music or perhaps chat to the person beside them. You don’t know these people at all, but to the writer, such a situation can provide a wealth of material. You can pass the time idly speculating about the lives, jobs, families, even the hopes and dreams, of your fellow travelers. Similarly, if you undertake a regular journey to work on a bus or train each morning with lots of other people, the possibilities for inspiration are almost endless.
Create Something from Nothing
If you drive to work, you probably don’t normally notice the things you pass each day, such as company names and logos, advertising billboards, road signs and so on. Yet these things too can provide a starting point for your writing. As an exercise, choose a selection of things that you see one morning then write them down once you get to work. From there, your task is to create a short story, even if it’s only one page, involving all of those items. You could also choose ten words that you encounter on the way to work and write a short piece using all of those words at least once. And if your day wasn’t that interesting, turn that into a writing challenge too. Recall the most mind-numbing aspect of your day and write a short poem about it. It might not win any awards for content or style, but creating that poem about such a bland topic might be just what you need to get moving with your writing.
Chapter Two: Creating Time and Space for Your Writing
Whether you’re just starting out as a writer or are a seasoned professional with several published novels to your credit, it’s important to have the right space to effectively pursue your chosen craft. You need to be comfortable in the area in which you choose to work within your home. If you have a laptop, you may write in various locations in the house, in the backyard or even in coffee shops, but sooner or later you’ll wish to create your own space. Writing, especially of fiction, is a solitary business by nature and you need to remain focused, which is much easier to achieve if you have a distinct area in which to work.
The Home Office
In terms of furniture, you don’t have to go overboard and buy the most up-to-date office equipment. Just be sure to get a desk and chair that are comfortable, with enough room not just for a computer, but anything else you think you may need to have close at hand. Some office equipment is relatively small, but a printer can often take up as much room as a computer, so be sure to allow for that in your office area. It’s always a good idea to keep storage places in mind as well. Get a filing cabinet or something similar, because once you start to get serious about your writing, you soon begin to accumulate paper, related to marketing ideas, writing tips, starting points for stories and so on, and the paper piles up very quickly. You also have to bear in mind that you may need other types of storage space, such as shelves and small cabinets for office supplies and the numerous other items that constitute the traditional home office. And have some scrap paper handy at all times, in an easily accessible drawer or folder. If you’re like me, you’re always scribbling something down as you work on one project or another. Adequate light is also a must, whether this means natural light from a nearby window or lamps and ceiling lighting for the evenings. Computer screens can be hard on the eyes and the last thing you need is for your writing time to be associated with you experiencing headaches or other discomfort.
Anyone engaged in the craft of writing is at least proficient, and often an expert, in creating magic with words, sentences and paragraphs, but often the exact opposite can be said of their office space. Given the stereotypical perception of the creative mind, one might not expect a writer’s workspace to be neat and well organized. Yet, if your home office isn’t a place in which you truly feel at home, your creativity will ultimately suffer.
Time for Writing
It’s very important to set up your office space so that you can be comfortable while working on your writing projects, but it’s equally important to set time aside for your writing. This can be particularly challenging for people with younger children, especially if they’re using the same computer and workspace. It can also be extremely difficult for those with regular jobs, as these may entail long hours. Aspiring authors may have little time to spare once they return home at the end of the day. However, if you set time aside on Saturday mornings, for example, to do some writing for a couple of hours, make sure you stick to it. If you have a partner who can take care of the children that day, this will free you from distractions. And if you decide to designate the evenings for your creativity, make sure that you adhere to a set time to finish your writing session, especially if you have to work the next day. Even if you’re utterly inspired to complete the latest chapter of that potential bestseller and it might take all night, it won’t do you any good if you fall asleep at work the next day and lose your job. If you’re going to write again the following evening, the ideas will still be there anyway. Doubtless you’ll still think about your writing at various points throughout the day, and may even make a note or two while you’re at the office, out at lunch or stuck in traffic. However, if you’re going to do your writing justice, you need to be able to focus when you have the time available to work on your project.
Night and Day
I do a lot of my creative work at night, especially during the school year from September to June, although this is largely a legacy from the time when I worked outside the home from Monday to Friday. In more recent years, I’ve gradually moved away from working exclusively in the evening and now try to get more writing done during the daylight hours. However, I find that full days conducting workshops with children and doing presentations can be exhausting. Consequently, I often do very little creative work once I get home if I’ve been busy with work at schools. At these times, my work at home seems to be limited to responding to e-mails, attending to blogs, answering inquiries from teachers and engaging in various aspects of promotional work. During busy periods, very little creative work gets done. If you have a full-time job during the week, your only option is to create your masterpiece at night or over the weekend. However, this process has to be finely balanced with allowing time for your family. Often, spouses and other family members can be incredibly supportive of your burning desire to break into print, but they can also soon begin to feel neglected if the writing project starts to take over your life. Develop a schedule, setting time aside in the evening or weekend to attend to your writing, but also have a firm starting time and especially a finish time, no matter how involved in the creative process you are. Always remember to be respectful of the people in your life who are supporting your efforts and allowing you the precious time to pursue your dream.
Chapter Three: The Curse of Writer’s Block
Writer’s block is usually defined as the temporary loss of ability to begin or continue writing, usually due to lack of creativity and inspiration. Let’s assume that the hypothetical writer in question is in good physical condition, since being unable to write can often be linked to changes or disruptions in health and wellbeing, such as depression and anxiety. We should also assume that the writer is residing in a relatively free society, where their writing is not restricted by censorship, government regulations, or civil or international conflict, and that the writer is living in reasonable socio-economic circumstances. Historically, it should also be noted that many women and working-class writers have often been unable to devote themselves to their writing because their social and economic circumstances prevented them from doing so.
The most widely held belief is that writer’s block is simply part of a natural ebb and flow in anyone’s creative process. I haven’t normally experienced writer’s block, at least not in the sense of running out of creativity or ideas. I might occasionally experience a lack of motivation rather than an absence of inspiration, but it certainly still stops me from getting any work done. As I often point out to children at school visits when we are discussing where ideas come from, I can sometimes get a lot of ideas in the same day, but then nothing of any significance for months at a time. If the dreaded block happens to you, rest assured that it also happens to established writers, no matter how prodigious their output, so you’re not alone.
Planning Ahead
In the days before computers, when writers were restricted to typewriters or pen and paper, one writer had an ideal strategy. Each time he was about to finish writing for the day he would always make sure he started another clean page. Even if all he wrote was a few lines, it prevented him from coming in the next day to the daunting prospect of a blank sheet of paper, which would most likely have the effect of freezing any inspiration and being a deterrent to getting started again right away. I always create a detailed outline of a novel before I start work, but not all writers work this way, no matter what their preferred genre.
However, even if you don’t usually work with an initial plan, if you’re stuck at a particular point in the story, writing a basic outline could be a good way to get back on track. You can even try breaking the story down into smaller chunks, with just the main points and headings, as is common with information on websites. It might even result in you taking the plot in a whole new direction that you had never previously considered, to the benefit of the story as a whole. You could also try reviewing your notes, research or source materials. Alternatively, you could search for writing exercises online or engage in random writing exercises of your own, writing down whatever comes to mind, just to get the process moving again.
Switch Projects
If I’m struggling a little with a project, I also opt for writing tasks unrelated to my current novel, such as writing articles, composing emails, planning out another story, creating a new word-search puzzle for my website, making changes to my online pages, editing blog entries, sending invoices and other paperwork to schools in advance of an author visit, or other general marketing and promotional work. Once I’m tapping away at the keyboard, the creative juices eventually flow again. It’s also a good idea to walk away from the computer every once in a while, just to take a break from your writing.
I often work elsewhere in the house, such as at the kitchen table, for example, when I’m preparing a new workshop or residency, writing an outline and so on, usually with pen and paper. This can also involve editing a manuscript, if I’m at that point in the process and I need to see the novel on paper, so I print off a copy and go elsewhere, simply for a change of scenery. I’ll also sometimes head to a coffee shop or some similar establishment, working for several hours and invariably return home feeling refreshed. As writers, we spend so much time at our desks, engrossed in our projects and it’s a good idea to take a break and recharge our batteries every now and again.
Take a Break
To combat the dreaded writer’s block, another idea is to engage in non-writing activities. It might be overly simple, but you’d be surprised at the ideas that come to mind or the clutter that can be removed from your thoughts when out walking the dog, for example. And even if you don’t have a dog, get out in the fresh air and blow away those cobwebs. Maybe try running errands, doing laundry or other housework, yard work in the summer, or raking leaves in the fall. Meditating or relaxation exercises may ease the stress associated with the temporary impasse with your writing. Perhaps you also pursue other artistic endeavours such as painting, completely unconnected to your usual projects, but this again may stimulate your creativity. You could even attempt something out of the ordinary or try an activity that is a genuinely new experience for you. If your particular writer’s block has resulted in a lack of new ideas, attempts to spark creativity by going somewhere new or doing something different could prove very worthwhile.
Reading, watching movies or plays, listening to music or similar activities might also bring inspiration. Writing, particularly of fiction, can be a lonely experience, and spending too much time alone in front of the computer can make writers prone to depression. In addition, too much caffeine, lack of sleep, not enough exercise, or neglecting your diet will sooner or later adversely affect your health, which will in turn damage your creativity. Writing is often a solitary occupation, but you don’t have to live like a hermit.
