    Prof. Rajinder M. Kalra is Professor Emeritus, International Institute of Adult and lifelong Education Delhi India. He is also Member of B.C. College of teachers Canada Dr. Kalra is former Adjunct Professor at the faculty of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby B.C. Canada and was also appointed as a Visiting Professor OISE University of Toronto, Ontario and University of Washington Bellingham (Washington state) U.S.A. He worked as Senior Academic Consultant on HIV/AIDS projects in Progressive Intercultural community Society (PICS), Vancouver, Canada. Prof. Kalra was Dean (Academic), National Institute of Education (NCERT), National Council of Educational Research and Training Delhi (India) Prof. Kalra has won international recognition (STAR AWARDS- Washington D.C., The Chemical Institute of Canada Award Ottawa) for his outstanding contributions is educational experimentation and innovations.       PREFACE

      India has emerged as a country with one of the largest number of citizens infected with HIV/AIDS. More than 3 million of India’s 1 billion people are infected with HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS. The Government of India and numerous NGO’s are focusing on AIDS prevention through media, social interaction and education.

      The burden of disease, however is too great and much work needs to be done on prevention strategies, especially among industrial and transport workers.

      Industrial workers are the backbone of our economy and nation builders. It is essential, therefore, that AIDS prevention education be an integral component during initiating and training of these workers in any industry.

      HIV infection is an un-precedent challenge for today’s highly advanced medical science. The curse has indiscriminately fallen on all sects of society sparing not even the new born child due to HIV infection in mother.

      Despite the relentless struggle to check its spread and find a vaccine to control it, the success has been just enough to prolong the life of the affected person by administrating expensive cocktails of medicines. The Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is not very easily available and affordable to the reach of the less fortunate people who form a vast majority of those suffering from the HIV infection. The Known certainty about the HIV is its mode of transmission which is:

      (1.) Exchange of Body fluids of infected persons blood, serum, vaginal fluids or blood infected saliva.

      (2.) New born baby of the infected mother from the mother’s blood at the time of delivery or even the foetus may contract the infection in the womb.

      Since sexual behavior mainly determines the exchange of body fluids, educating the public especially young people to modify their sexual behavior is imperative to control the HIV Epidemic.

      Having sex with one known person who is free from the HIV infection is the safest way to avoid HIV/AIDS Epidemic but in our modern complex social patterns where young people have to wait far too long to establish permanent relationships because of economical and social reasons, sexual behavior in most societies today can vary from one night stands to casual sex with multiple partners or even homosexuality.

      This scenario is further complicated with abuse of alcohol and drug addiction (I.V.)

      Therefore, awareness and prevention programmes through education about HIV/AIDS Epidemic need to be a mandatory part of any training or orientation programme for youth development, employment and management.

      Special attention needs to be given to the high risk groups:

      • Sex Workers

      • Migrant Workers

      • Industrial Workers

      • Truck Drivers

      • Professionals engaged in handling blood products especially blood transfusion.

      • Young persons who could be absolutely ignorant about the perils of indulging in unsafe sex, they could also be exploited by older men and women.

      The focus of this handbook is on HIV/AIDS among Industrial workers and transport workers with special reference to India.

      The author has already developed a hand book with American Authors (Prof. Francis X. Sutman and Ms. Archana Uppal) titled World Perspective on HIV and AIDS Epidemic for less Fortunate.

      The author of this hand book has suggested the establishment of effective counseling centres focusing on AIDS prevention, drug de-addiction and alcohol abuse in each and every industry unit.
