30413.pngINTRODUCTION
30420.pngShifting Life
A few years back, I not only thought my life was good, but I also would have said it was great. I enjoyed good health, a happy marriage, a beautiful daughter, a comfortable home, a wonderful community, and meaningful work. Then one day, quite out of the blue, came a shocking thunderbolt. While getting ready for a business trip to Europe, my wife informed me that she had decided not to return home this time! At first I thought I did not hear her correctly. Maybe the statement was incomplete or she was going to tell me she was coming back later or earlier than planned. That was not the case. She was clearly stating that our twenty-year marriage was ending soon. Perhaps it was the shock of the statement, or maybe there wasn’t enough time to get into a lengthy discussion, but nothing more was said. I was left behind to process the end of my deeply cherished family life.
After the shock, I immersed myself in the demands of work. I worked in the research and development department of a major pharmaceutical company, and I felt good about my contribution in finding cures for diseases and illnesses. I continued my daily workout regimen and tried to remain positive.
As I was trying to cope with the impending disintegration of my family, I was struck with more disastrous news, this time from my supervisor. He informed me that due to a corporate reorganization, my department was being dissolved; 450 employees, including me, were being let go. Once again, I was speechless. Quietly I left the meeting, handed my badge to the security guard, and wished him well. I recall sitting in my car, feeling like this was all surreal, and just trying to process my job loss. I was in so much pain. I had lost my marriage and my job. I wondered what was to come next.
The next day I would wake up not knowing what to do with my day. There would be no structure, no expectations, and no purpose. Though I was in a state of shock, I knew I must reach out for help.
I called my friend Doug and shared with him what had transpired at work that morning. He said quietly, I can hear in your voice that this is serious. Stay where you are. I’ll come over within thirty minutes.
When he arrived, he suggested, Let’s go out for breakfast so we can talk.
As I began to describe what had just taken place that morning, I felt my emotions beginning to loosen as my words flowed out spontaneously. Sitting at the table over scrambled eggs and toast, Doug listened with care and understanding, giving me the empathetic support I needed with his caring words of wisdom.
I’ll never forget one important insight he shared during that breakfast: Hyder, this is your chance to redesign your life. As a career counselor, I have known many people who have taken a major loss like this, survived it, and changed their lives along the lines of what they truly want to accomplish in the aftermath. Years later, looking back, they have seen that the loss turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to them.
While Doug was talking, I kept remembering a line from Hafiz, one of my favorite Sufi poets: Before a breakthrough, there is always a breakdown.
As I revisited these wise words of the ancient Persian mystic, I felt a mixture of sorrow, hope, and fear.
To move forward toward redesigning my life, Doug told me to make a list of the things I really wanted to do before I die. I knew right then this list would become the blueprint of the new life I was supposed to design. I started with a list of all the things I hadn’t been able to do because of my former work demands. This was my list.
