    Introduction

    Cutting the Sun is a poem by the Indian-born, Texas-based writer and poet Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. It first appeared in Divakaruni's collection Leaving Yuba City, which was published in 1997. Like the other works contained in the volume, this poem is a meditation on identity, dislocation, and the clashing of cultures inseparable from the immigrant experience. The poem derives its name and inspiration from the works of the Italian artist Francesco Clemente, in particular, his series titled Indian Miniatures. Both poem and art celebrate and explore the historic, tumultuous exchange between East and West, infusing culture-specific snapshots with sweeping, universal themes. This poem resonates with suffering, resolve, and the insistent pull of the past.

    Author Biography

    Divakaruni was born on July 29, 1956, in Kolkata, India, where she spent most of her childhood and later graduated from the local university. She was encouraged in her academic endeavors by a strict, traditional family of moderate means. She immigrated to the United States to pursue advanced degrees and while doing so worked eclectic, often menial jobs to make ends meet and fund her studies. She attained a master's degree in English from Wright University in Ohio and a doctorate in the same field from the University of California,
