    Introduction

Seven Laments for the War-Dead is a poem by Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai, Israel's best known poet, who has an international reputation. This poem, which was originally written in Hebrew, first appeared in an English translation in Amichai's collection Amen (1977), translated by Amichai and Ted Hughes, and titled Seven Laments for the Fallen in the War. It appeared again in The Selected Poetry of Yehuda Amichai in 1986, in a different translation by Chana Bloch, titled Seven Laments for the War-Dead. Bloch's translation of the poem also appears in After the First Rain: Israeli Poems on War and Peace, edited by Moshe Dor and Barbara Goldberg (1998). All three books are currently available, although readers should be aware that in After the First Rain, the poem contains a misprint (at the end of section 3, the word hears should be hearts).

In Seven Laments for the War-Dead, Amichai, who fought in several of Israel's wars, reflects on his experience of war. He recalls some of the friends he lost and offers a number of different perspectives on how people and societies mourn their dead in war. With its depth of feeling, range of allusions, and vivid imagery, Seven Laments for the War-Dead serves as a good introduction to Amichai's work as a whole.

In 1933, Adolf Hitler and the Nazis came to power in Germany and introduced harsh, restrictive measures against the Jews. In 1935, as Amichai and his childhood friend Ruth walked to school, they were attacked and beaten by four members of the Hitler Youth. In the same year, Amichai's father saw the bodies of two Jews from the village who had been beaten to death. He
