P. D. Jacob

Author Paul Daniel Jacob is a lifelong student of religion, psychology, philosophy, logic, and human behavior. He is as likely to be found hiking atop a mountain in the jungles of Belize or Guatemala as he would be giving a presentation to a group of health educators at an urban conference center. Since childhood, Paul has been drawn to remote locations that provide an ideal atmosphere for introspection, observation, and respect for nature. His inspirations emerge out of the relationships between humankind and all other life forms and nonliving matter, which constitute the clockworks of life. “There can be no separation of, and we should not under-appreciate, the components of our world. Each seemingly insignificant action or inaction is a course-altering factor in the evolution of our vast universe. Our spiritualism inspires our participation. Our spiritual component allows us to be in awe.” P. D. Jacob, author of; THE AWAKENING DREAM – Journey on the Wings of a Thousand Angels HOW WE SHOULD THINK – The Intersections of Philosophical Thought THE FREETHINKING HUMANIST – Pocketbook

    About the author

    Preface

A good book, like a good meal, should come into your life when you are hungry. It should provide sustenance, yet it should be pleasing to your senses as well. It should have a beginning which stimulates your appetite, a main course to provide substance and nourishment, and finally something for the sweet tooth to bid you fond memories of the whole experience. As for the first course of this meal, I hope to stimulate your palate by reaching in and touching that essence which is hidden deep behind your eyes.

Beyond the mere flesh and bone of a person there exists something much greater. You might call it the mind, the soul or the spirit. That essence defines who we are and who we want to become. It directs our thoughts and conversations. It controls our emotions and ambitions. Most importantly, it determines whether or not we are happy. And it is susceptible to injury and disease just like the structural flesh and bone that support it. You cannot see that spirit within, but it depends on you for life support, nurturing and maintenance.

The intent of this book is to deepen the relationship between your brain and your mind, your body and soul, and to enhance the communication highway which links them. We will explore the forces which control our actions. We will examine the reasoning which influences our behavior. We will take advantage of the control we have over our thoughts and behaviors. And we will identify some basic principles and concepts to assist us on our journey through life’s obstacles and pitfalls. The goal is to foster greater understanding of that relationship between our physical and mental selves, and to provide ourselves with a simple set of tools that will reduce stress and optimize our ability to enjoy the wonderful things life and planet earth have to offer. So, I’ll light a candle at the dinner table while you pull up a chair. □

    Introduction

A precious gift, the child is born out of the mother’s womb, devoid of thought, oblivious. Instinct drives its body as if it were an automobile. Each maneuver exercised, however tactful, is under complete control of an innate force, consistent with, but independent of the child’s will. Soon the infant begins to perceive an environment of shapes, sounds, colors and smells. He creates a few of his own smells. Perceive he does, but conceive he does not. He is aware only that he exists. Instinctive behaviors alone assure that his survival needs of food and nurturing are met.

One day the child cries an unprecedented type of cry. This particular cry required forethought on the part of the child. It wasn’t in response to an inborn stimulus as before, but rather because he has been conditioned to cry for attention. Wow, I can make mom come when I do this! This event represents a great transition indicative of a developing mind. This behavior is significant because the child is beginning to function in accordance with information accumulated since birth by the brain. What motivates the child to seek attention in the first place? An inborn need to seek out and process information. Also known as curiosity-and manifesting itself in acts such as chewing on dad’s keys, poking mom in the eye and finger painting with Gerber products. He is now acting on his own accord. Thus begins the process of experimentation, and of trial and error, which will create a personality and allow this little, squirming blob to survive and to be unique.

If we didn’t have this instinctive need to seek out and process information (to learn what’s safe, what’s dangerous, what’s acceptable in our environment and what isn’t) we would surely fall into danger and die. Although it is argued to what extent the brain/mind has developed during infancy and early childhood, it is generally accepted that a basic personality and thought pattern has been developed by the time a child nears the age of three or four. Parents will attest to the presence of a distinct personality in their very young children. This doesn’t mean modifications in one’s personality cannot occur after this age, but is does suggest that a significant change will require some sort of efort or mind-altering experience. For no longer is the child’s brain a dry sponge eager to absorb any and every piece of information it can perceive. It is now becoming a complicated and interwoven data network. And each new piece of information needs
