About this ebook

I had wanted to entitle this book of personal experiences as Been There, Done That but research showed that others had already used that title along with variations. How could I say the same thing in a different way? My version of the phrase "Been There, Done That" is "Already Been Chewed".

    INTRODUCTION

I had wanted to entitle this book of personal experiences as Been There, Done That but research showed that others had already used that title along with variations. How could I say the same thing in a different way? My version of the phrase Been There, Done That is Already Been Chewed

    1 EMULATE OR RELEGATE?

The game of Comparisons can be played anywhere that people are gathered together. Eventually, I haul out my mental checklist to ascertain whether I am motivated to change. An obvious starting place is the worksite. I admired an array of skills among my co-workers.  When computer courses were offered free of charge, I signed up for them. On the other hand, I noticed some traits involving immorality which I declined to copy. My self-concept balanced out, since I averaged above their morality and below their skills.

On television, I saw spiritual programs in which I respected the personality and character of the host/ hostess. Through their testimonies and teachings, I developed goals that I could apply to myself. One goal was a simulation of their weekly schedules. A negative side was some vocabulary that I chose to reject in my personal life. I balanced equally in my self-concept because I rose above their vocabulary while I lacked their maturity in Christ.

Another place for comparison proved to be the church scene. I saw admirable spiritual levels in the ministers and in some of the laypersons. Therefore, I aspired to do the things necessary to reach those levels. On the contrary, I felt like relegating some of the secular behavior that existed within the church walls.  My self-concept came out evenly when I scored low in spiritual levels but high in non-secular behavior.

All of the preceding examples were important in my life but not nearly as important as the traits of characters in the Bible.  I wanted to be like Paul, David, and the faithful people in Hebrews 11.  Yet even the heroes and heroines made mistakes from which I would hope to learn.

In retrospect, these incidents affected my self-concept in a positive way. Each case found me possessing some traits with which I felt pleased.  Simultaneously, in each case I noted areas in which I could improve with application, dedication, and practice. As in all of life, one must strengthen the weak areas and reach for attainable goals of improvement in an ongoing process. It would behoove me to stop comparing myself with people
