    WILD WEST LOVE

    Chapter One

Newton, Kansas had garnered itself quite a reputation by the late 1890s.  It was known as a lawless place where men acted on their most base desires, from wild shootouts in the streets to the innumerable brothels and dens of sin dotting the streets.  The reality of it was far less exciting, but no less interesting.  The town was home to a half dozen saloons, a large general store, two very successful brothels, and a full trading post.

Charlotte Baker, freed as a young girl in Virginia, had moved to Newton to escape the discrimination and lack of opportunity seemingly everywhere she turned.  The wild frontier was a place where every man and woman was treated equally based on their contributions. Unlike most everywhere else, it wasn’t uncommon to see men of all backgrounds atop their painted horses, riding and roping together as equals.  The hard lives led out on the frontier assured equality.

She worked in The Rose Saloon, the most popular watering hole and gambling spot in town.  As a bigger woman, she was more than capable of breaking up any fight that broke out over a game of cards, and had done so more than a few times since starting in her position a few months ago.  At the back, a large spiral staircase wound up and into the second floor where a half dozen rooms were situated.  More often than not, these were used for meet-ups between cowboys and the women they knew in town.

Charlotte figured that nobody needed lovin’ quite as much as the cowboys in those parts, working as hard as they did.  She’d considered taking up work at one of the brothels, but decided against it after a fallout between the owner of the Rose Saloon and the mistress of Skin Central, the largest of the brothels in town.  They had a disagreement over signage, Skin Central’s new sign co-opting the rose as its symbol, even styled similarly to The Rose Saloon’s.  Of course, Charlotte’s boss knew that a simple saloon could not compete with a brothel, and that business would be tarnished by being subconsciously thought of as the lesser of two roses.

Not a word had passed between them since the falling out, though the mistress relented and instead opted for a silhouette on her sign. Markus, owner of the Rose and Charlotte’s boss, was a very persuasive man.  Though he was among her potential suitors and had made obvious overtures when she first arrived in Newton years ago, the only thing he gave her now were subtle hints that he was still interested.  He respected her for the work she did above all else. After all, and she wasn’t just something to be lusted over.

Charlotte was a strong, independent, progressive woman, a rare rose in her own right in an area where women were far too often widowed or waiting for a cowboy who was hardly ever home.  She lived in a house she bought and furnished with her own money, and had established several lucrative contracts with suppliers.  Her charm and wit was quite possibly the most valuable asset the Rose had, and Markus knew it.  All deals and talks went through her, and with his final approval, the Rose had become the most popular attraction in Newton, general store and brothels aside.  Primarily, she was a barkeep, serving up whiskey and sarsaparilla in equal measure to the men and women of Newton.  She’d garnered a reputation as a friendly but firm woman, and few were the residents who’d cross her purposely.  Still, she was skilled and respected for dealing with rowdy out-of-towners.  More often than not, she had any situation at the Rose under control before word even reached the ears of the Sheriff or Deputy Sheriff.  For that reason, they only responded to the most dire of calls, of which there'd been a few.

Charlotte was round and soft at the hips and chest, ample and voluptuous.  Plenty of cowboys were after her hand and more, but she turned each and every one down.  She was waiting for the right man to come through town, and she was sure she’d know him when she saw him.  Tall, strong, fair haired, blue eyes.  Nordic, maybe.

Ever since she was a girl, she'd always had the same fantasy, and she'd already made the first steps to making it a reality.  She daydreamed about owning her own saloon, serving customers for a while until the man of her dreams walked in.  She could practically see him strolling through the swinging double doors of the saloon, dusty and sweaty from a hard day’s work.  He’d take his hat off, lay it on the bar, and lean in to her with a million dollar smile.  His full lips would part, and he’d say...

Anybody know where a fella can get a drink around here?  Isaac Smith strode through the swinging double doors, clean and trim.  He wore a deep chocolate suit, expertly tailored to his slender yet strong frame.  His hands were unblemished by the hard work expected in this part of the country, and the fine bag he carried with him suggested that he was a man of some wealth and power.  He’d amassed a
