PROLOGUE
The last strains of a familiar Christmas song floated on the night air from a nearby restaurant as Tamara Morgan left the bakery where she worked and walked quickly to her car. She pulled her coat tighter around herself, but it did little good against the frigid December cold.
Marissa.
Just as she slid her key into the lock she heard the all too familiar voice. No! Her mind screamed even as her hands began to shake and she felt fear grip her. The fear seemed to liquefy inside her belly, spreading into her legs and arms making her feel weak.
Her heart began to beat in triple time. She dragged in and blew out a ragged breath, fighting to remain calm and turn the key to unlock the door.
She was almost surprised when the key did its job and unlocked the car door. She pulled the key out of the lock and grasped the flat metal shaft between her second and third fingers. Not much of a weapon, she knew, but it was better than nothing.
What happened next felt like time moved in slow motion, when in actuality, it was probably less than thirty seconds. She grasped the key tightly in her right hand while her left hand slid down the door and raised the door handle. She pulled the car door open and then he was there, his body pressed tightly against hers.
He wound one hand in her hair, his grip bringing pain. His lips caressed her throat where her pulse ricocheted against her skin. His other hand grasped her possessively around the waist.
Relax. Play along, she told herself. She leaned into him even though disgust was the only thing she felt.
Oh Baby. It has been so long. I have dreamed of you in my arms.
She said nothing but forced herself to relax more in his embrace. The arm across her stomach was pinning her right arm to her side and the key was useless if she couldn’t lift her arm.
You missed me too, huh baby?
he said.
Disgust rose in her as she listened to him. She could not quite grasp how his delusion was so real to him that he actually thought she could want and desire him.
He turned her toward him suddenly, both hands lifting to rest on her shoulders. She stood face to face now with the man who had brought so much torment into her life. She schooled her features into a mask. She would not show him how he terrified her. No fear, no fear she repeated to herself like a mantra.
Why did you leave me baby? You knew you couldn’t hide from me forever.
He gripped her shoulders then, his fingers biting into them, but she did not flinch. Why did you hide from me?
His dark eyes glittered with anger and the brightness of something darker… a psychosis maybe… a demonic presence?
Some scoffed at that, she knew, but she had seen something there, something not quite human looking at her from behind those dark, dark eyes. She stared him down, her blue eyes not wavering from his.
Why?
He asked again shaking her slightly.
She did not answer him, her mind was too busy turning over scenarios that would allow her to escape. Where should I hit him with the key? She thought frantically. She would only get one shot. She had to make it count. But she had to make sure she did not drop the key because she had to have it to get away.
Tamara, is everything ok?
The owner of the bakery came out the back door of his shop. He stood there for a moment, hands on hips.
It was just enough of a distraction that she needed. Call 911 Carl!
She shouted. Get back inside!
She swung the key then, connecting with the side of David’s head, the key made direct contact with his temple.
The second he released her, she turned and grabbed the door to her car and flung herself inside. She shoved the key into the ignition and turned. The engine did not disappoint and came to life immediately. She slammed down the lock on the door, just as he stumbled toward the car. She put the car in reverse and spun backwards out of the space and then forward into the road.
She looked
