    Conclusion

Before you embark on the journey to learning how to follow the ketogenic diet to bring about different benefits, it is best that you have a good understanding of what the diet is about. This knowledge will help you to approach the diet from a point of knowledge, as opposed to just preparing recipes that you don’t understand why they are there in the first place. This knowledge will also help you to customize your own recipes easily.

    Ketogenic Diet For Beginners

    What Is It?

The Ketogenic diet, also referred to as the keto diet or low carb high fat (LCHF) diet, refers to a type of low carbohydrate diet that is high in fat and adequate in protein.

The diet has one priority; to get the body into optimal ketosis i.e. a state where the body relies on ketones for energy as opposed to glucose. For this to happen, you have to ensure that your intake of carbohydrates is very low (not more than 50grams) then pair the low carbohydrates intake with high fat intake and moderate protein intake.

This way of eating, as you might have noticed, goes against everything you’ve ever been taught about eating healthy i.e. you should eat more of carbohydrates, take minimal amount of fats and a moderate amount of proteins – according to the USDA food pyramid. And it is for a reason; the huge amount of carbohydrates that you’ve been taking over the years are primarily the reason why you are unhealthy and overweight/obese. Let me explain:

    Our Conventional Way Of Eating

When you eat, the body spends the next 3-5 hours digesting the food you’ve eaten to prepare it for absorption into the bloodstream where the digested food is transported to different parts of the body where it is used. The different macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) are broken down into simple molecules namely glucose, fatty acids and amino acids respectively. As the body creates these simple molecules, it also starts absorbing them into the bloodstream. Of the 3 molecules, glucose is worth mentioning because of several reasons. For starters, although it forms the biggest portion of the absorbed energy molecules, the body cells don’t have their inbuilt mechanism of utilizing glucose. Instead, they rely on insulin (a hormone produced by the beta cells of the pancreas) to tell them to ‘open up’ so as to take in glucose. That’s not all; glucose tends to be the simplest molecule for the body to metabolize so when it is present in the bloodstream, the body dedicates its efforts towards producing energy from glucose. This is also coupled with the fact that the body is designed in a way that ensures that any glucose in the bloodstream does
