Stones of Remembrance - Daniel G. Amen, MD
Introduction
Remember the days of long ago;
think about the generations past.
DEUTERONOMY 32:7
Memory enables us to bring the joys, dreams, and lessons of yesterday into today. As we recall God’s faithfulness, we remain centered and growing, and we move forward with a sense of purpose. Memory allows us to keep our loved ones close, even when they are far away. It assures us that our personal history and experiences matter—that we have something valuable to teach the generations to come.
This is the way God designed our minds to work—to remember. It’s been that way from the very beginning.
In the Old Testament, after the Israelites crossed the Jordan River and entered into the Promised Land, God gave this command to Joshua: Take twelve stones . . . and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight
(Joshua 4:3,
ESV
). Joshua delegated this task to one leader from each of Israel’s twelve tribes and then explained the rocks’ significance:
When your children ask in time to come, What do those stones mean to you?
then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the
LORD. . . . So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial
