      The author chooses to remain anonymous except by his pen name, he has chosen to do so due to his past employment with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The nature of his work and the persons that he has interviewed of whom some are high-profile individuals from a varying number of countries and backgrounds, some consist members of previous regimes, rebel groups, political parties, military, and criminals. Therefore, there is a potential risk in disclosing his real identity for fear of repercussion. In addition to the risk, remaining anonymous is also out of respect and value he attaches to the confidentiality of personal information of the persons he interviewed over the years.

      He has written this book with the utmost hope that the reader will be enlightened in a manner that will enable them and their families to obtain freedom from persecution and live safe and fulfilling lives.

      The purpose of this book is to provide persons seeking asylum a basic guide on practical issues and considerations that they need to make before, during and after seeking asylum. The information contained is not exhaustive as this is meant to be a basic guide, which is targeted at persons seeking asylum but have limited or no knowledge on the subject and those who may wish to know more about asylum and develop a basic understanding of the issues, risks and decisions they may face during the process of seeking asylum.

      I have extensive knowledge in the subject of asylum by way of working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for eight years in various capacities. Subsequently, I continue to engage with asylum seekers & refugees daily, to assist them in any way I can. As such during this period, I have conducted thousands of interviews on asylum seekers and assessed their asylum claims, and have firsthand experience of the issues they face in their daily lives. The information contained in this book is mostly derived from my personal experience in the subject matter and may not be reflected in any other sources
