    Chapter 1:

An Overview of Rome and Its Regions

    Rome at a Glance:

So you’ve decided to venture to one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Italy but don’t know where to start. Between wondering about the Pantheon versus the Colosseum, and spaghetti versus ravioli, there’s plenty to figure out. But don’t worry; this guide is here to help you navigate the Eternal City with the ease of a seasoned Roman traveler. There’s a reason Rome welcomes millions of tourists every year with its vast array of things to see, excellent food, and the pleasure of Roman hospitality.

From glorious towering cathedrals, to amazing works of art, to powerful ancient palaces, to the very center of Christianity, Rome has a lot to offer and is sure to please even the most finicky traveler. It’s made up of various eclectic neighborhoods which will be covered more extensively later on. Each neighborhood stands on its own with magnificent sights to see and things to do, but it’s the combination of them all that truly makes Rome shine as a diversely historic yet still modern city. First things first, however, and that is planning out your trip.

    Planning Your Trip:

One of the most important things when it comes to planning your Rome trip is figuring out when you’re going to go. It’s important to realize when the best times to go are weather wise so that you’re not stuck inside during a rainy week or roasting in the oppressive summer sun.

    • Best Time To Visit Rome-

    ◦ Travel Tip: Avoid mid June until mid September. The summer rush picks up and not only will it be hot and muggy, but crowded as well.

    ◦ Travel Tip: Many hotels and restaurants take a month or two off in the winter months of November through February. Also many other businesses close for the holiday break, so these months are not an ideal time to visit.

    • Rome Weather-

Summertime in Italy in general can be very hot. This also goes for Rome. High temperatures tend to begin in May and can last until October. The winters are typically mild, with an average of around fifty degrees Fahrenheit or ten degrees Celsius. Also, although it can get very hot in the afternoon, nights tend to be a bit cooler and more comfortable.

    • Money-

Italy uses the Euro (EUR), and cash is the typical form of payment in Rome. Be sure to check on exchange rates before heading to Rome. Exchange rates tend to be more favorable at the arrival destination rather than where you depart from. You may, however, want to exchange a bit of currency before leaving for Italy just to have handy for any emergency purchases you might need to make when you get to the arrival airport.

    ◦ Travel Tip: It’s best to exchange your
