Freedom from Worry - Patricia Wilson

    INTRODUCTION

The world is full of things to worry about: political uncertainty and social change, wars and natural disasters, financial booms and busts. The things that once formed the bedrock of society are no longer there—family units are fragmented and churches are struggling with declining attendance and failing to reach the younger generations. The moral compass of the world seems to have gone haywire, and high-speed communications send us into an information overload of bad news with our morning coffee. Traffic jams, high prices, job losses, teen suicides, rising medical costs . . . when will it all end? It seems to me that we have good reason to be worried.

Yet, Jesus spoke so plainly, Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own (Matt. 6:34). You’d think this would be music to the ears of the chronic worrier, but in many, it arouses a deep sense of guilt. How can I be a Christian and be such a worrywart? How can I release all that worries me? How can I truly let go of my worries and trust God to take care of them?

As a worrying Christian, have you realized that constant worrying indicates that something isn’t quite right in your Christian walk? Has your worrying actually caused you to feel separated from God? Are you suffering from the physical effects of constant worry—stress, hypertension, ulcers—and you know that this isn’t God’s intention for you?

Despite all your good intentions to heed Jesus’ words and give your worries to God, do you often find yourself back on the worrying treadmill?

God calls you to leave your worrying behind. In the next twenty-eight days, you have an opportunity to enter prayerfully into a new relationship with God. Using the Psalms as your centering meditation, you will reflect on why you spend your time worrying and why you forget about God’s love in a worrying situation. Through prayer, you’ll learn how to give your worries to the Good Shepherd, and most importantly, how to trust that God will take care of those worries. Jesus said, Do not be afraid little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom (Luke 12:32). These words are meant for you. God desires to give you peace of mind in any situation. When you accept the peace that God offers, the worry simply melts away. The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:7).

    HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

I wrote this book with the intention of offering practical solutions to the issue of excessive worrying. It’s easy to say all the right words and offer scriptural backup, but many need concrete actions with results that indicate change is occurring.

Each day begins with a discussion of an aspect of worrying. Following that, you will have the opportunity to read a psalm and reflect on its meaning for your life today. As you read the psalm, be aware of the words that resonate with you. This is God speaking to you. During the prayer time, add your own specific and personal words of prayer. Be honest—God knows your inner heart and understands your struggles. Finally, note how you are asked to be mindful in the next twenty-four hours. You may find it useful to go back at the end of the day and jot down what happened as you were mindful and how you felt about the exercise.

Commit yourself to a time each day for the next twenty-eight days in which you will consciously present yourself and your worry issues to God. It’s probably best to do this in the morning so that you can continue the theme throughout the rest of the day. However, not all of us are morning people, so choose a time that feels most comfortable to you. If you decide to make this a nightly practice, then remind yourself the next morning of your mindfulness for the day.

If you feel you’d like to go deeper in your journey, I recommend the Reflection Questions at the end of this book that may be answered alone or in a group.

As you go through the days and weeks, be aware that you are where God wants you to be. Even if the progress is slow and the task daunting, you are not alone. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory though our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15:57).

    WEEK 1

    I Can Do This

    MONDAY

    It’s impossible!

Are you already worrying that you won’t be able to make it through this book? Are you already thinking about whether you have the prayer power needed to overcome worry? Are you already concerned that your worrying might be a bigger issue than you thought? These are legitimate concerns, especially for a worrier. However, if you’ve read this far, you are exactly where God wants you to be: in a place where you
