Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), was the pen name of Oxford mathematician, logician, photographer, and author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. At age twenty he received a studentship at Christ Church and was appointed a lecturer in mathematics. Though shy, Dodgson enjoyed creating delightful stories for children. His world-famous works include the novels Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and the poems The Hunting of the Snark and Jabberwocky.

PREFACIO:
Si, y esto es algo desatinadamente posible, se acusara al autor de este breve, pero instructivo poema, de escribir tonterías, estoy convencido de que dicha acusación estaría basada en el siguiente verso:
Entonces el bauprés y el timón se confundían en ocasiones.
En vista de esta dolorosa posibilidad, no apelaré indignado (como podría hacer) a mis otros escritos para demostrar que soy incapaz de algo semejante; no aludiré (como podría hacer) al fuerte propósito moral de este poema, ni a los principios aritméticos tan precavidamente inculcados en él, ni a sus nobles enseñanzas de historia natural. Prefiero adoptar el procedimiento más prosaico de explicar simplemente cómo ocurrió todo.
El capitán, que era especialmente sensible en cuanto a las apariencias, solía hacer que el bauprés fuese desembarcado una o dos veces por semana para barnizarlo y en más de una ocasión, al llegar el momento de volverlo a poner en su sitio, no había nadie a bordo que supiese a qué extremo del barco pertenecía.
Todos sabían que no servía de nada consultar al capitán, ya que éste simplemente se habría referido a su Código Naval y habría leído en voz alta y patética las Instrucciones del Almirantazgo, que nadie en el barco entendía, así que generalmente terminaban por sujetarlo, como podían, sobre el timón.
