      The first time Kyler laid eyes on the great illusionist his mouth went dry. Then he was swept into a slow-motion version of the world. The sort that made it seem like a person, a godly sort of person in this case, could even make clocks slow in awe.

      Typical fanboy reaction.

      Kyler had seen it happen over pop music stars during his brief sojourn over the waybridge. He hadn't had time to truly settle into life among humans, but he'd begun to enjoy the notion of not becoming a breeding cow. Among humans, being an omega had no meaning, let alone duty attached to it. Unfortunately, that brief glimmer of hope for a life he might take the reins of according to his own will faded before he could draw it close and savor the illusion.

      His mother surrendered them rather than face imprisonment, but they'd been on the run since the Milcith intensified the laws on escaping Aenterra. As a result, they were close to penniless. Mother was eventually forced to take work in the nursery of the Advisory Towers to make ends meet.

      Kyler was of age now to take care of himself. He'd missed his slot at Trades, though. It left him with no vocation that might help him carve a meager living. He wasn't an omega fit for crime, or the life of a whore.

      The thought of the latter made him shudder.

      Setting down the overpriced, spiked Mithel tea, he eased back in the shadows. Out of sight as the illusionist grinned at the audience and took his place on the
