Sound Design for Filmmakers - Murray Stiller
Introduction
This book is an introduction to the art, technique, and workflow for creating and editing sound for film.
I have taught in film schools and university film programs for (too) much of my professional life. At every school I hear the same complaint: there aren’t enough film sound courses and students don’t get enough sound instruction. And I agree. But they have to give up other courses to make time for more sound. There is only so much time in the calendar; the glass can only get so full. So sound courses are not added.
I am frequently asked about where people can go to learn about sound design for film. There are a couple of schools but they are expensive and I do not endorse them. These schools do not effectively prepare students for what to do when the course is over. They are technical and do not give you the big picture about the film world and working in the industry, getting jobs, or about the art and philosophy of sound.
How do you learn about sound? By practicing sound design and by listening. You just have to have enough of the tools at your disposal to get started. From there, experience will take you to the next level. Nobody starts at the top. You have to learn as you go.

Who this book is for?
This book is intended to help filmmakers with their sound of their films and beginner sound designers with their first steps getting to work.
This book is for filmmakers who know that they don’t know enough about how to create and edit the sound for their films.
This book is an introduction for people who want to explore sound designing for film as a professional option (or proficient hobby).
This book is for the film enthusiast and theorist who loves to know how films are made and wants to talk intelligently about them.
I’m not sure how you heard about this book but I would like to know. I am curious how you connected with me and how I can better help my audience. I am curious to know what you would like to know more about in sound design. This is something that I can address in future books or on my FilmSchoolSound YouTube, Facebook, or website (www.filmschoolsound.com).

Why I am writing this book?
I am writing this book to address a problem. The problem is that there is not much taught about film sound, there are few resources, and every film needs someone who knows how to edit and create the soundtrack.
I am writing this book because I am more than a little interested in sound (I don’t like the overused term ‘passionate’), having started in the film industry as a musician. I have taught sound in colleges and universities for almost twenty years and have done a PhD about sound for film.
Film sound is one of the most creative arts - and this is a well-kept secret. Well, it isn’t actually a secret as much as an ignored fact. Once you get into the topic and start to see how film sound is created, you too will be a believer. I am writing this book because it is fun teaching people about the principles, art, and techniques of sound for film and video.

What you will learn from this book
This is the big question, isn’t it? If you don’t learn anything, you wasted your time. So here is what you will learn.
I want to put sound edit and design in context with the rest of the film. You will learn about the big picture; what makes a good sound design, the workflow between when sound is recorded to when it is delivered.
You will learn about who does what in the sound department. You will learn about the leadership of a film crew and how post production sound fits.
You will learn introductory terms and practices of designing sound for film.
You will learn about the elements of sound that go into a film.
You will learn techniques and methods you can take to your own practice in sound for film.
You will learn the basics of preparing a sound design session and about the most common tools for shaping sound.
I will make some recommendation on how and where to start putting what you have learned into practice.
Finally, I will list some resources for you to research and follow.
