Seattle: it's more than Starbucks and the Space Needle.
Home to Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, T-Mobile, Nintendo of America, and Boeing, Seattle is about as modern and forward-thinking as the US can get. Whether you're looking for the ultra-modern tech or a good cup of joe, this city of almost 700,000 people is one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation.
Inhabited by Native Americans for at least 4,000 years before the Europeans showed up, the name 'Seattle' comes from then-Chief Si'ahl (anglicized to Seattle). Originally a logger town, the Great Seattle Fire in 1889 brought most of it down, and the financial panic of 1893 didn't help much. It became a commercial and shipbuilding center during the Klondike Gold Rush starting in 1896, and on July 14, 1897, the S.S. Portland docked in Seattle with a ton of gold.
During the 20th century, growth came courtesy of businesses building industries — Boeing after World War II, Microsoft in the 1980's, Amazon in the 1990's — while recognition came from the 1962 World's Fair (where the now-iconic Space Needle debuted).
