- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I quite enjoyed this. 4.25 stars.
The plot plays with a boss/employee romantic relationship dynamic. Of course, it’s highly inappropriate but also part of what makes the story fun and perhaps why the reader picked it up in the first place.
I found the two leads, Wendy and Janet, to be intriguing because they are such unique characters in and of themselves and then to each other. The author chose to give them nuance making them less of a stereotype and much more interesting overall.
Wendy is young, “out of Janet’s league”, funny, irreverent and just sort of a bouncing ball of energy. However, she’s goal focused when she needs to be and highly intelligent. Wendy is goofy/geeky yet in many respects has confidence in herself as a person.
Janet is a rod of contained energy and elegance, always in control. The author could’ve easily made her a bitch but she didn’t. We find Janet to be a good person that is very flawed and has a deep crack in *her* self-worth outside of the workplace.
It makes for an interesting mix and creates some natural chemistry and conflict between the two.
The quality of writing is high. I didn’t find “Scissor Link” to be laugh out loud funny but it was definitely exceptionally amusing throughout. I thought the glove scene was epic and reason enough to read the book alone. Despite the elevated humor, there is a touch of sadness, heart, and there’s some realness to it.
The dialogue is fantastic, the distinct perspectives of being in Janet vs Wendy’s head and the reveal of character is excellent, and there’s a great supporting cast.
Yes, I recommend. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is both hilarious (really, I laughed out loud more than once) and hot! That was a surprisingly enjoyable - and rare - combination. It wasn't a perfect story, but the hotness and hilarity made up for some minor complaints. One in particular is that I wish the author had better explained and explored Janet and her motivations. Don't miss the author bio, Steve Martin fans will recognize it!
