About this ebook

A firefly at dusk. Exercise from walking the dog. The satisfaction we get when our family enjoy a meal we cooked. Good-natured people in stores. There are countless things around us in everyday life that can turn a day around when we begin to look for them.
Study after study show that an optimistic outlook on life benefits both our mental and physical health, yet is often an uncommon trait in these times of conflict, political turmoil and 24-hour news outlets relaying the latest tragedies from anywhere on the globe. "Thank Goodness - 101 Things To Be Grateful For Today" offers readers a chance to reflect on all the good in life and challenges them to not only look for good in their own lives but offers ways to do so. A collection of wonders the author is thankful for is accompanied by questions for the reader to ponder , such as how they last showed compassion for somebody else and how that made them feel , or what the most meaningful holiday on the calendar is to them. Selected sketches and cartoons illustrate some of the points. The book can be read even in a single sitting, or as a daily ritual designed to make each day brighter.

Dave Ruch

Dave was born and raised in southern Ontario and recently has been dividing his time between there and Texas, where his fiancee is from. A graduate of University of Toronto, he's held a number of different jobs in the past couple of decades, from hotel night manager to photo-lab operator to member of a mobile store setup crew. These varied jobs have made him rich- in experience and stories! His writing has been seen in newspapers including the Toronto Sun and Oshawa This Week as well as regional magazines and his photo art has been featured at exhibits in both Ontario and Texas. In his spare time you'll usually find Dave spending time in nature, listening to 70s and 80s music or watching baseball, patiently waiting for his beloved Toronto Blue Jays to win another World Series.Or perhaps writing about those things - he authors a daily music blog ("A Sound Day") as well as a baseball one ("One Flew Over The Jays Nest"). His fondness for romcom movies and Generation X-themed novels helped inspire his current release, "Grace, Fully Living" available here. In the style of "Bridget Jones Diary" with a dash of "Sex and the City" , it follows happy but hapless Grace Tyler through a year as she enters the new millennium and a new life away from her small town roots. Dave's belief that an optimistic outlook is the key to a full and happy life inspired his book, "Thank Goodness! 101 Things to Be Grateful For Today", a collection of personal accounts of good things often unnoticed, from a firefly at night to how sports unites a community to the wonder of foods from all around the world available at our local store...and many more. It follows "The Mockingbird Speaks" published in 2014 dealing with two things of importance to him: appreciating wildlife and in particular birds, and looking at things in a positive light.

    "Some People Are Always Grumbling Because Roses Have Thorns;

    I Am Thankful That Thorns Have Roses" -Alphonse Karr

    For Cinnamon,

    and all the others who have touched my life with their light

    Some see the glass as half full; others, half empty. Still others don't care how full the glass is and choose to only focus on the ring it might leave on the table. Optimism can be a rather scarce commodity.

    That may be understandable in today's society. If negativity isn't born into us, everyday life is likely to immerse us in it. Between news with its emphasis on the bad events of the day, politicians who go back on their word, role models who let our children down and the inequities we see around us in our communties it's easy to see why pessimism and cynicism take root and grow. Yet giving in to that way of thinking doesn't do us any favors.

    Study after study show that a positive outlook on life makes us healthier as well as happier (and one would assume, the better health in turn would add to our happiness!) Suzanne Segerstrom, a University of Kentucky researcher says optimists are in general both psychologically and physiologically healthier. A 2011 Mayo Clinic study reports that people who are basically optimistic have a reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease and improved immune systems. It, and other studies like it, suggests not only does the improved outlook on life have a direct influence over one's health, people that are more positive tend to choose healthier lifestyles as well.

    A big part of being optimistic involves being grateful. It's tough to be bitter and angry when you think of the many good things going on in your life, regardless of the trying circumstances as well. Even the business-oriented Forbes magazine suggests that gratitude is important to success. As they put it cultivating gratitude doesn't cost any money and it certainly doesn't take much time but the benefits are enormous and include opening the door to more friendships, helping your self-esteem and improving your sleep - all of which, needless to say, can help in the workplace as well as outside of it.

    For me, however, being positive hasn't always come easy. I was taught to be skeptical of others and frequently surrounded by people who complained a lot about things they didn't have or things that were wrong with their life. Eventually I realized these sorts were not a lot of fun to be around and that, ergo, I wasn't either when I had that mindset. So I set out to try to be more upbeat and optimistic.

    To do so, I decided to begin a list. Every day I would write something I was thankful for in my life. At first, on good days, it was easy. But on some days, days I'd had an argument with someone or felt slighted at work perhaps, it was a bit more difficult. Still, I made myself think of something good and added it to the list. In time I could feel my whole attitude changing. It was harder to be negative when I had a long list of great things in my life to be thankful for, and if I did feel down, I could look over the list and be reminded of the good.

    That was three years ago and I continue to list positives every day. I'm sure by now I have repeated myself on the list at times, but it's still a rather impressive list of good. Perhaps a list like that might enhance your life as well, but even if making one isn't your thing, I've decided to share with you some of the things on my list of things I'm grateful for in the hope that it will make your day better. You may relate to some of the things I've listed and in turn think of more things relevent to yourself that are wonderful. To help you along, I've added a question or two you might like to ponder after each point.

    I hope this book helps you feel better about your life, and you taking the time to look at it is one more thing I'm thankful for.

    I grew up in what was then a relatively homogenous suburb of Toronto. We had good neighbors we knew by name, there was less mobility back then. It's no surprise that we made friends and had few problems. But since I've become
