About this ebook

Today’s move of God is not new theology, but it is a fresh experience of the same theological truths that have existed for two thousand years. Jesus warns against trying to fit what God is doing today into the exact same form of what He did in the past. The Kingdom, the Power, and the Hope of Glory contends the average Christian has the responsibility and empowerment to reflect the light of God’s glory to a world desperate for answers. God does speak to us today, within the confines of His inspired Word. Scripture is the only absolute authority, and the benchmark against which any leading of the Holy Spirit must be judged. God’s dealing with man changes over time, but His character, righteousness, and truth never change.

Believers are called to occupy until He comes. Several of Jesus’ parables illustrate the themes He taught regarding the activity of His church during His absence. The Kingdom, the Power and the Hope of Glory is not a theoretical book; it is a practical call to action. It encourages believers to see unity of the body as an essential piece to where the Holy Spirit wants to take His church. What God wants to do now is not have a few great evangelists each reaching millions, but rather millions of evangelists, each reaching a few as they live their daily lives. This book encourages believers to establish His kingdom on earth by using their delegated authority to access His power and bring Him glory.

It is a timely reminder that Christ in you is the hope of glory.

    About the Author

    1. Only Scripture

God told me to write this book.

Now that I have your attention, let me elaborate. No audible instruction came to me, no booming voice in the thunder saying, Thou shalt write. No handwriting on the wall, or neon sign in the sky appeared. Rather, what resembled a long series of gentle nudges pointed me in this direction, course corrections so small that each one individually was almost imperceptible. Along the journey to any destination where He leads, there are innumerable opportunities to veer off the path, and veer we do. To stay on target, we must recognize His voice and respond to it. In one of Jesus’ I Am statements in the Gospel of John, He tells us not only that He is the Good Shepherd, but also that His sheep will hear His voice and follow. He implies that if you are not actively hearing Him and following Him, you should probably check your status as a sheep.

John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.

John 10:27-28 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.

My path toward writing began over ten years ago when a man, who I believe was hearing the voice of the Father, told me about talents he felt God had placed in me. At the time I didn’t see those talents in my own life, but I wrote them down and tucked them away. A few years ago I happened to find the notes from that conversation, and was pleasantly surprised to find that what he had seen back then I was starting to see too. Among those notes I read his encouragement to write a book. When I re-discovered the idea of a book, I sat down and worked through some ideas. Nothing came of any of my musings, so I set it aside again.

One of the course corrections recently received along this path was in the form of a childhood memory. The subject of recollection occurred in the fall of the year, harvest time in Iowa. I was either three or four years old, and somehow found my way outside while my dad was working. He was using a large metal shovel to direct soybeans pouring from a wagon into the spinning metal shaft of a grain auger that would carry them up to be stored for the winter. The operation presented a danger that I didn’t recognize. Apparently I thought it would be a great idea to help with the task, so I ventured over to my sandbox and retrieved my small red plastic shovel. When I returned to the wagon, my dad had moved away from the auger and had his back to me, so I just stuck the shovel into the flowing soybeans and commenced helping. I was oblivious to any danger from the powerful auger spinning inches from my shovel. When Dad turned around and saw me, he ordered me to get back. The tone of his instruction must have conveyed some sense of urgency, because I immediately obeyed and moved back to safety away from the machinery.

I hadn’t thought about that event for decades until one morning while asking God for direction, the memory came out of nowhere like lightning. The entire scene flashed in my brain for only a second or two, and immediately after came the thought as though God were whispering directly in my ear, It is important that you learn to obey Me that quickly. Delayed obedience is disobedience.

The vast majority of gentle nudges from God come while reading His word. I try to spend a good amount of time reading the Bible, frequently digging into a specific topic that interests me at the moment. I often fail to devote as much time to it as I should. Last winter, it had been quite some time since I set out to read a large portion of the Bible from beginning to end. My pastor encouraged the congregation to pick a Bible reading plan for the new-year, so I found one that would have me read through the entire Bible over the course of the next twelve months. The plan called for a couple of Old Testament chapters, a couple of Psalms, a few verses from Proverbs, and a couple of New Testament chapters each day. I embarked on the plan but eventually fell behind schedule.

After a few months, one specific verse seemed to leap off the page at me and I was off to the races on a tangent, studying to find out what God’s Word had to say about glory. That lasted for many weeks; I would get distracted by some interesting topic but kept getting pulled back to the idea of glory. The reading plan went to the back burner as I studied and dug into the topic of glory.

Those were just a few examples of the Holy Spirit providing direction. Over the course of many years, God was speaking to me through many different avenues where I was able to hear His voice. I’m quite sure He was speaking through many other avenues that I completely missed during that time as well. I believe God wants to communicate with us constantly. We must learn to listen. I received inspiration from memories, conversations with other Christians, instruction and encouragement from my pastors, books, movies and even a Broadway musical that had nothing whatsoever to do with Christianity. There was the still small voice of God providing instruction through all of these. It is awesome that God can speak in so many ways, but it presents a danger. We must ensure that what we hear is based on His Word.

Psalm 138:2 I will worship toward Your holy temple,

    And praise Your name

    For Your loving kindness and Your truth;

For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.

We live in a world increasingly based on the changeable thoughts, feelings, and opinions of man rather than the immutable truth of God that He has made available to us through His Word. The Gospel of John begins with the introduction of the Eternal Word, telling us, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. A few verses later we discover, And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. You can’t spend a lot of time studying the Bible to find out about glory without finding yourself reading John 1:14.

While in search of a better understanding of glory, God took me on a slight side trip to remind me that Jesus and Word are one in the same. Matthew 7:24-27 recounts Jesus’ telling of the parable of the wise and foolish builder.

"Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall."

This parable underscores the importance of building your life on the rock solid, unmoving foundation of Jesus and His Word. The apostle Paul tells us in I Corinthians 3 that Jesus is the one and only foundation on which to build. While there have been some changes in the way God interacts with man during the time we have been on this planet, there is a rock solid foundation of what God determines to be acceptable and unacceptable, pleasing and displeasing, righteous and unrighteous. He is very clear about these things in His Word. His means change over time but His message never changes.

1 Corinthians 3:11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

His righteousness does not evolve over time. He
