Making The Move

About this ebook
“Making the Move” is an e-book created to help seniors and their caregivers downsize any house quickly, efficiently and with a lot less stress.
For 38 years my sister Elizabeth and I have had a domestic and commercial cleaning business which eventually evolved into a full time catering service. And yet, we never forgot our cleaning customers. As the years past by and they grew older, their children would call us for help. Dad had died and mom was moving into an assisted living facility or the last child had married and was moving out, leaving mom alone in a huge house. It was time to downsize into a senior condo complex. Many times Elizabeth would give a hand downsizing and organizing the move.
In September of 2009 we retired. I thought life would slow down and get a bit boring. I was so wrong. Years before, Elizabeth had agreed to become the Administrator if a Living Trust for an old family friend. By November of that year, our friend was hospitalized for over medicating herself and causing bleeding. Her Dementia had been the root cause of the situation. Her doctors would not let her return home without supervision. It was decided that assisted living would give her the independence she wanted and the supervision she needed.
Once again, we where downsizing and organizing another home for a move. However, this time it proved to be a monumental task. It was my sister job, as her Administrator to handle all of Dot’s affairs. We started from scratch organizing all of Dot’s legal and medical paperwork along with her financial affairs. The next project was the house, which turned into a nightmare. Because of her confused state our normally organized retired teacher, had turned into a hoarder. I can not tell you how many endless hours we spent throwing out junk.
“Making the Move” was born out of our experiences with The Dot Project. It is an e-book created to help seniors and caregivers downsize any house more efficiently and with a lot less stress. The book comes complete with forms to keep you on track and suggestions to save you time and expense.
Keeping organized is an important part of the job. The book will shrink what seems to be impossible into a more manageable perspective. Although this book was designed for seniors, it has other uses. Renters who are moving into their first home or the family who has been transferred out of state will find the forms and info invaluable in keeping themselves on track. It is my sincere hope that “Making the Move” will save the user a great deal of stress and frustration.
Midge Valentine
My name is Margaret Valentine, and I was born on Feb. 6, 1948, in Huntington Sta., Long Island. New York. I completed high school in 1966, and worked as an Operating Room Tech. for the next 6 years. In 1972 my sister Elizabeth and I formed a commercial/domestic cleaning service. The business grew quickly. Soon we added catering to the mix, doing small parties for our costumers. After my younger sisters death in 1979, the family moved to Connecticut. We needed a complete change. Elizabeth and I re-established our business and watched It grow again. By the mid 80's we moved out of cleaning into full time food service. The last 15 years of our business has been spent as a Corporate Caterers for two prominent Medical Manufacturers. We retired in Sept. of 2009.Even though we had phased out the cleaning , we never forgot our customers. As they grew older, their children would call us to help downsize the homestead so that mom could move to a Senior Condo, or dad could move in with his daughter. Elizabeth and I where happy to help. When we retired in 2009, we thought life would slow down and be a bit boring. We were so wrong. Our greatest challenge came through an old family friend. Elizabeth had taken the job of being the Executor for her Living Trust many years ago. In November of 2009, Dot had been hospitalized for over-medicating herself. Her Dementia was starting to cause complications. Her doctor would not let her live alone any longer. It was decided that she should go to an Assisted Living Facility to get the supervision she needed. The task of downsizing and selling Dot's house fell to Elizabeth and myself. What we didn't know was that Dementia had turned a perfectly organized person into a hoarder and pack rat. It took us a long time to downsize and sell her house. In 2015, when things grew quiet again, I thought I might dabble in something that I had always wanted to do. I have enjoyed writing for a very long time but, never had the time to get serious about it. I thought I might try my hand at writing a book about our experience with The Dot Project. By the third day of writing, the book had taken on a life of it's own. It shifted from a story to a "How To Manuel" on methodically organizing and downsizing a home. The book covers all the steps from setting up the medical/legal aspects to the final sale. I only wish that I could have had this book when Elizabeth and I where doing Dot's house. It would have saved us a lot of time and stress. If you would like to read the long version of this Bio., please go to http://www.makingthemove.biz/authors-biography/

Making The Move - Midge Valentine
1. INTRODUCTION
For many years, my sister and I had a domestic cleaning business. Over time, our customers have come to us with special needs.
Dad had passed away and Mom was going into an assisted living community.
All the children have grown up and moved out. I want to downsize into a condo.
We gladly helped sort and organize to take some of the stress out of the situation.
The last project really put us over the top. A close friend of ours had a medical incident that put her in the hospital. Since her illness was triggered by her dementia, the doctors would not allow her to live alone anymore. She decided to go into assisted living. We offered to help her make the move and get her house ready for sale.
My sister and I didn’t know until we walked into the house for the first time that our friend was a hoarder. I have to admit that I was ready to turn and run; the job was overwhelming and I had no clue where to
