    Introduction to Cigars

    Smoking a cigar is considered to be the pinnacle of smoking and the height of culture. Anyone can smoke a cigarette, but it takes a special someone to smoke a cigar.

    Cigars are made by wrapping a tobacco leaf filling with a tobacco leaf. They are larger than cigarettes and take longer to smoke. The connoisseur considers a cigar to be the finest way for anyone to enjoy tobacco.

    Cigars, as you will learn, come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, with the most commonly found being a round headed cigar that has parallel sides. The Perfecto is a cigar with a pointed head and tapering sides, whilst the Panatela is a thin, long, and straight cigar. In India and Asia you will find a Cheroot cigar which is has an open end.

    Cigar smoking has its own terminology for cigar sizes, with cigars ranging from 3½ to 7½ in length. Cigars range from smallest to largest at the Half Corona, Tres Petit Corona, Petit Corona, Corona Grande, Lonsdale, and Double Corona.

    Cigar boxes have initials stamped on them which tell you the color of the tobacco leaf ranging from CCC for light (Claro), CC for medium (Colorado-Claro), C for dark (Colorado), and CM for very dark (Colorado-Maduro). Typically the darker the leaf, the stronger the tobacco is.

    The cigar is not thought to have originated in Cuba, and Mayans as far back as the 10th century were smoking tobacco leaves bound with string.
