We can at times ask the questions such as, why did this happen or why me or perhaps where God was as this all developed? This book is may not be an answer to all these questions, but I believe this document may help anyone start or continue the process to recovery. There is much that has not been written within this writing, and this includes many circumstances of my youth and up to Vietnam, since I am unable to However, more yet I have learned that some things need to not be ever mentioned, but be forgotten. This can be especially true if there were negative feelings, actions or thoughts that could prevent us from moving on towards wholeness. It has been said, "Best to forget, forgive where needed, and move on" and that is recall them completely or not at all. I believe that my mind was blocking these thoughts and actions at times, because I hurt those who loved me by my reactions and decisions, as well, along with some occurrences where I fully did not understand nor relate to my surroundings and relationships due to my immaturity.

Minister Gary Tate

I am a Christian father of four grown adults; I have seen God's grace and mercy in my life. I will be happily married for 45 years this year (2016), to my wife, Anne. She is a woman of great faith and love, whom I share this life with. We overcame the statistics for marriages of Vietnam veterans, as my wife has told me. We have done this all while loving and caring for our severely and profoundly disabled daughter, which the stress alone could have added so many complications to our lives if we allowed it. We have raised four children into four grown adults. Our first born, Rebecca, has her B.A. in education and is a teacher. Our second child, Robert, works as a Supervisor for a cleaning company and was a coach with special needs children, and has a girlfriend named Natalie. Our third child, Mariel, has received her B.S.R.N., in Nursing, and was married in 2007 to Ronell. They have a son, Nadir, who turned 17 this year (2013). They have another sibling named Levi born into this world in 2010 and then Micah, conceived in 2012 and are expecting their third boy by the first week of September, 2014. Ronell and Mariel have a church now in the south suburbs of Chicago, Chicago/Dallas - Jesus Center. Finally, our youngest, Gayle, who, as I often say, "I believe I would not be the person I am today without her." I have a ministry named: Veterans Outreach/Marksman Ministry that is a sole-propriety ministry that I started in 2012. I have received my Associate degree in August of 2006 and my license as a minister, September 16, 2012 from God Carriers International Ministries.

    Authors Notes

We can at times ask the questions such as, why did this happen or why me or perhaps where God was as this all developed? This book may not be an answer to all these questions, but I believe this document may help anyone start or continue the process to recovery.

There is much that has not been written within this writing, and this includes many circumstances of my youth and up to Vietnam, since I am unable to recall them completely or not at all. I believe that my mind was blocking these thoughts and actions at times, because I hurt those who loved me by my reactions and decisions, as well, along with some occurrences where I fully did not understand nor relate to my surroundings and relationships due to my immaturity.

However, more yet I have learned that some things need to not be ever mentioned, but be forgotten. This can be especially true if there were negative feelings, actions or thoughts that could prevent us from moving on towards wholeness. It has been said, best to forgive and move on and that is what I believe we all need to strive for. That is because otherwise the past can continue to control and hold us. This truly has become my progression, and my goal not to let what was given to me in Vietnam is forgotten nor wasted by my lack of effort or decisions. It was my new starting place, another opportunity I had to begin again to live this life. One I never want to waste away.

    Acknowledgments

To God, Who, had and has kept me safe in the midst of all I faced, saved me in every way possible. He has helped me beyond words in what I can explain and is to this very day leading, guiding and instructing me as to my future by the Holy Spirit.

To my parents who loved me beyond all the challenges they faced. To my mother, Genevieve, she never gave up on me. Her insistence in my going to private school and church did, in time, have its’ positive affect. To my father, Robert, who instilled a military influence and as well gave me a work ethic that brought me many benefits.

To Robert, my younger brother by two years, he had to spend most of his early life watching over his older brother. To Aileen, my younger sister by 11 years, I left home when she was quite young. To both of you, as much as I would like to, I cannot change yesterday. I cannot undo what decisions I made, as much, as at times I would! I now seek to make the best of today. I am very grateful for your love and understanding beyond all.

To my wife, Anne, who, I met right after I got home from Vietnam in 1971, at a local college party, on May 20th that was being held at a local forest preserve. She had shared she had prayed for a Vietnam Veteran and I told her I wanted to marry her that day. About a year after we met, we did! She is a woman of great faith and love whom I share this life with.

God’s word says when a man finds a wife, he has found a good thing. I have been greatly blessed.

To my children, all who had to go through several different situations themselves, as most children do with a parent or parents who are struggling. To my oldest daughter, Rebecca, to my son, Robert, to my second born daughter, Mariel and finally to our lastborn daughter, Gayle, who, as I say, I believe I, would not be the person I am today. She is our special child; she is severely and profoundly handicapped. They each had a father that was seeking to overcome and walk this life out to be more than a survivor.

I have had help in producing this article from college professors. When I first decided to change careers, I returned to Moraine Valley Community College. That was in 1989 and had Randy De Villez in an English 101 course that helped me, prodded me, and believed in me. Also, Kim Livingston, later at South Suburban College in a business writing class who asked to see the rough draft I had completed. She helped this project by giving me a guiding hand.

I created a Pal-talk room, called Tribute to our troops, and Tara Schoenberger helped administrate in it, starting around the spring of 2007. This room was open to all and reached out to veterans, their family and friends.

And there were individuals, who all became friends, and like Kath, Tammy, LuAnn, Jo, and Nicole, becoming sister’s in the faith through an internet talk group I created in a Pal-talk room, called Tribute to our troops, which was broadcast to our troops via GI Radio with DJ Dove, who, became another sister in the faith.

Being a Vietnam veteran as I have said, I wanted to support our current veterans and reach out to all veterans as well. The room offered various Christian music as well biblical based materials. Those and I in the room had the opportunity to speak to veterans, their family and friends who visited the room and offered them our support and prayer. They each were very helpful; as they had heard the studies I did and then helped with comments and encouragements. I compiled and sorted the completed studies into relative headings that I did weekly that were done as an interactive, basic and balanced bible sharing that I wrote and did broadcast until I closed in spring of 2009. This is where most of the information given in this book for chapter’s six – ten was taken from; this was done over about a two-year process.

In January of 2011, I reopened Tribute to the troop’s and broadcast it on Tuesday and Thursday from 9 to 11 am CST:

Nicole Dauch and Joseph Farrell have helped me finish this book. Her father was a Veteran in World War 2, he was from Canada, and fought for the United States. Nicole made suggestions to improve this book as well did Joseph, who is a Vietnam veteran, as he started to proofread most of the starting draft.

I as well then met Sarah Bratcher, who has a ministry known as Life After Abuse in a Pal-talk room for seven years now, in 2010. Along with Sarah, Lin and Kathy who are spiritual sisters and Susan is a spiritual daughter, and they all are administrators in the room. This room reaches out to anyone who is dealing or has dealt with abuse in any form. They read various Christian books or play CD’s from various ministers that give listeners ideas along with scriptural help to become or continue their progress of being free from abuse as I stated earlier. Then questions are given for those in the room to answer that help reinforce the message given.

While being in the room now for a few years, I have listened to the topics discussed and then reading or hearing comments from those in the room, I found that many do struggle with stress and trauma in many other ways, similar as with P.T.S.D., including the similar characteristics, symptoms and feelings.
