About this ebook
The oil spill was the largest in U.S. history. In April 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded and sank. Oil gushed into the Gulf of Mexico from a deep ocean well. For months, the energy company BP tried to control the leak. More than four million barrels of oil flowed into the Gulf before the well was stopped. Fishers, shrimpers, and many others along the Gulf coast lost their income as polluted water prevented fishing and stifled tourism.
Meanwhile, countless workers tried to contain the spilled oil. Boat crews skimmed the oil slicks on the surface. Scientists poured chemicals into the water to break up the oil. Then bacteria could remove the smaller oil droplets from the water. Wildlife organizations rescued oil-slicked pelicans, turtles, and other animals. The government, together with BP and volunteers, rallied to help coastal areas recover.
Oil Spill! explores the Gulf of Mexico disaster from the beginning. With vivid images and diagrams, it breaks down the murky mess to look at how it happened, how it affected the Gulf, how it compares to past spills, and how kids can help the area recover.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Most children have probably heard about the BP oil spill in Gulf of Mexico. All children might have heard about the oil spill, but don't know all the details about it. This book gives great detail on the oil spill. This oil spill is that largest in United States history. This book is kind of sad but overall a great book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Review copy from Lerner PublishingApril 2010: The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, about 50 miles off of the Louisiana coast. Eleven crew members died, and seventeen others were injured. The giant drilling rig burned for two days before it sank into the Gulf, but the worst damage was yet to come: the pipe from the oil well in the sea floor had broken and was leaking massive amounts of poisonous, thick oil. Ten days after the accident, the oil spill was the size of the state of Delaware! This is the story of how scientists, engineers, and oil rig crews worked together, trying many different ways to contain the oil spill, plug the well, and try to prevent more damage to the environment. Not everything worked well, and people and animals suffered because of the spill: people lost their jobs and homes, animals were killed when the toxic oil spread into their habitats, and in some areas, the environmental effects will last for years. Well-written and exceptionally well-designed, with excellent photos, graphs and maps, this is a timely story of disaster, hard work and tough choices. While avoiding the political controversy of the spill, Landau focuses on the environmental aspects and consequences. She includes short explanations of five other oil spill disasters, including the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska, and the Persian Gulf spills during the Gulf War of the early 1990's. There is also a section about what students can choose to do to make a difference! 5th grade and up.
