An Italian from Florence, Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) was a writer and poet who was involved in the political life of his native city.
The author of love poems (La Vita Nuova), Dante also wrote works about various topics, such as language (De Vulgari Eloquentia) and politics (Monarchia). However, he is best known for having written the Divine Comedy. He dedicated his life to this long epic poem, which is divided into three canticas, which correspond to the Christian conception of the afterlife: Hell, Purgatory and Paradise.
