Chapter 1: Why Smoothies?
There are many reasons that people begin to add smoothies to their diet. For some, the low carbohydrate nutritious smoothie can be an ideal way to help them lose weight and stay on their diets. For others, the goal is to switch to a plant-based lifestyle or to add more plant-based meal options to their diet to get away from processed foods and GMO meats.
A plant-based diet is not difficult to maintain and it can provide you with everything you need to stay healthy. In fact, many doctors are now recommending to their patients to adopt a plant-based diet to help manage, prevent, or treat chronic conditions. Everything that grows naturally – from fruits and vegetables to greens, herbs and spices have all the essential vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants that people struggle to get enough of. It does not make sense to try to get them from expensive supplements when you can easily change your diet and get everything you need. When you get it from the source, you are getting the form of all these essential elements that your body can use effectively.
The problem for many comes in how to get to the nutritious parts of the plants. This is why so many vegans and vegetarians wind up with severe vitamin deficiencies – they are eating the plant but are not able to get through the plants protective fibrous coating to get to the important part of the pulp. This is where smoothies come in. The process of blending your smoothie breaks down the fibrous walls of the plant that protect the pulp and make it easier for our bodies to digest the nutrients inside.
Smoothies make it easier to get more nutrition out of food then you normally would because instead of your body having to expend most of its energy and enzymes on breaking down a fibrous barrier it can focus on getting as much out of the food as possible. That isn’t to say that the fiber isn’t important; in fact, it is one of the most important parts of the fruit and vegetables that you need.
Dietary fiber and smoothies
While smoothies can make it easier to get more nutrition out of your food by breaking down the fibrous barrier to the nutrients inside, it can also make it far harder for you to get any nutrients at all. A recent study showed that people who juiced
were at a higher risk for vitamin deficiencies and type 2 diabetes than those who didn’t. These baffled researchers at first because they could not understand why a healthier diet was creating problems associated with a diet poor in nutrition.
The key lay in the fiber content of the juices. Unlike smoothies, which often use the whole rind of a fruit and stem of a vegetable, the most fibrous part of the ingredients, juicers tend to peel and strip their fruits and vegetables. By the time their combinations were pureed into juice form, none of the natural fiber was left. Without this natural, dietary fiber the body cannot digest and absorb nutrients at all. What juicers are left with is a drink with more sugar than your average soda.
Making a smoothie retains more fiber because more of the fruit and vegetable is used and the puree is not as thin as a juice setting. What most smoothie fans do is add fiber to their mixes to bring back up the level to what is needed to access all the nutrition, but in a form that can be maximized by the body. It doesn’t take much, just a sprinkling of dietary fiber supplement in your blend to give you what you need.
The fiber content in smoothies is also essential to making them a viable meal replacement and means for controlling hunger. Fiber slows the absorption of food so there is a longer time-release of sugar in the body. This will give you more energy, and better blood sugar control.
Understanding Superfoods
Superfood is a relatively new term that is applied to plants that have been identified as being powerful sources of nutrition and minerals for the human body. Most of the superfoods are common foods, such as beets and cabbage, but scientists have come to a much greater understanding of how they can contribute to maximum health.
