About this ebook
The early 1900’s were an exciting time for the prairies of Canada. Immigrants poured in from countries all around the world looking for an opportunity to begin a new life in the colonies. It was no walk in the park for these settlers; they faced a violent climate that spent six months of the year doing its best to kill everything. During the other 6 months the settlers were forced to endure drought, hordes of insects, heat, and extreme lightning storms. Not to mention language barriers between the various fellow settlers.
However the virgin land produced, boy did it produce when things were right. The settlers refined their agricultural skills to complement the land, further enhancing the yields and their profits. The Canadian prairies were indeed the “melting pot” for all of the settlers. The very character and makeup of the current residents of the prairies is a reflection composed of the cumulative results of the original settlers and their particular traditions, customs, foods and habits. There were no racial or ethnic issues to speak of; there simply wasn’t enough time or energy to waste hating your neighbor. And with everyone being in the same boat just attempting to survive circumvented any trivial segregation efforts. Having neighbors and friends were critical to everyone’s success. The following manuscript speaks to the memories of one particular family in the late nineteen hundreds and what it was like to live on the Saskatchewan prairies.
Martin E. Silenus
Martin E. Silenus, as many of you know, is/was an author that penned the Hyperion Cantos. He’s a charismatic individual from an amazing science fiction series by Dan Simmons. I love Martin Silenus, for his foul-mouth, his wit, intelligence, insight, and because he speaks his mind in no uncertain terms. He does not brook fools well! So I borrowed him, so to speak, to protect myself against retaliation of past transgressions and those that might still persist in wishing me harm. Hiding in plain sight, but for all intent and purpose invisible. I’m a quiet private person and seek no notoriety. Some say I am of no fixed address, I rather like that. But if pushed I generally suggest to those that insist, that I live out close to “bedlam and mayhem”. Generally migrating between hot arid desert and cool green agricultural prairies. It is true that I spend time on the road. Certain vehicles by design provide a home with all amenities to transport you, in your wanderings of the vast distances. Not quite a Starship, but a device of time and space that serves well enough. Within the persona of Martin I have of note, knowledge of computer technology, sniping ballistics, extensive off-road vehicles, and a profound love of sentient artificial intelligence systems and deep respect for Artilects. For that is, I perceive, the future of mankind. We are all in a slow process of ‘trans-human modification’ simply by way of the process of aging. Our parts fail and are replaced with products of engineering, science, and technology reflective of the capabilities of the day. The process in inevitable! I do hope you enjoy my literary musings and wanderings, or as Martin would refer to them as “reeking little piles of doggerel.” Whatever, beauty and pornography are in the eye of the beholder! Ta, ta for now! Martin E. Silenus
