About this ebook

18-year-old Paula Snow has been homeless for 5 long years, and is desperately seeking shelter from a terrifying thunderstorm. She is chased away from the only shelter she can find and, feeling helpless, she cringes against a cold salon wall. Moments later her prayers are answered when Renie comes to her aid and quickly becomes her guardian angel. Renie volunteers at Mariner House, a home for the lost and forlorn, and takes Paula there, where she meets Father Nicolas and Teddy McGill. Slowly Paula's life changes for the better and she learns a valuable lesson of worthiness and the love of God.

Fran Scholan

My name is Frances Landsberg, writing as Fran Scholan (pronounced Sho-lin). I was born and raised in South Africa, and still call it home. I have no formal training or diplomas to speak of, but have always loved the freedom of the written word, finding it very soothing. To date I have penned 11 short stories and novelettes, in a variety of genres, and they are all self-edited. I have also written some poetry, my favourite style being free verse. Other than writing, I enjoy crocheting, reading, and watching movies. I also have a great fascination with technology and I'm always learning something new. ** I would like to say thank you to everyone who takes the time to read my stories. My writing would be meaningless, were it not for all of you, so I thank you very, very much! :) **

The lightning flashed and the thunder rolled as if the world was coming to an end.

18-year-old Paula Snow felt the terror fill her like poison as she huddled in a corner under the Betfield bridge. Her mop of red hair and rags of clothes were dripping wet, but, soaked to the bone as she was, she was too scared to move. She cried and screamed as the next wave of thunder rolled, praying to a God she barely knew.

Please, God! Please make it stop!

On days like these, she hated living on the streets. On days like these, she wished for warm blankets, hot chocolate and a friendly face to wipe away the fears that paralysed her every time the skies became angry.

If only I had spoken to Mistress Belinda all those years ago, Paula said to herself, as, for the umpteenth time, she thought about and missed her days at the Mondayo Orphanage. If I had spoken to her, she would've made sure that I was safe. She wouldn't have allowed me to go back to those awful people! I have no-one but myself to blame for my predicament. If I had said something then, things could have turned out differently!

As her mind wandered into the past, she had forgotten about her fear, and it took a few moments before she realised that the storm had passed. The world had, once again, become gloriously silent, with only the drone of car engines vibrating in the morning air as they passed on the bridge overhead. She felt the beat of her heart slow down and the fear inside of her start to slip away. Lifting her gaze to the sky above, she saw that it was as black as night, even at seven o'clock in the morning. The clouds still looked thick and menacing, holding the silent promise
