About this ebook

Rhodie sticks her head under Sarabeth’s nightgown. “I could live under here,” she says, taking her panties into her teeth and growling.
“Sounds good,” says Sarabeth. “I’ll toss you some food every once in a while.”

Sarabeth is lucky to work from home, since paranormals are swarming the city and it’s really not safe to go out. On the other hand, she’s lonely. And hungry. And pretty sick of sitting inside listening to the violence out on the street.

After screwing up her courage and getting to the corner grocery, Sarabeth meets a woman whose everything she’s not—feisty, tough, fit—but they turn out to have a whole lot more in common that she first imagines.

Second bonus story, What Rhodie Saw, included in this edition!

    ––––––––

I WAS BORN at the wrong moment in history, or at least the history of this city. The sounds coming up from the street right now—I mean this very minute—glass breaking, men cursing, a couple of sirens. Then the thudding sound that I have learned is somebody is getting beaten up and not even yelling in protest. It’s one thud when a fist hits them, and another when they drop to the sidewalk. I’m telling you, this place has gotten bad.

I can’t say exactly what month or even what year it was, but it was like some kind of tipping point, right? When the vampires and shifters and the rest of them, they went from being objects of curiosity you barely saw to pretty much running the joint. Now all the humans are scared to death so we huddle indoors as much as we can. We avoid going out at night, at least I sure do. And we wonder...what’s going to become of us? Are we destined to stay inside, ordering in Chinese and binge-watching Netflix until humanity is so overrun there aren’t enough of us left to procreate?

That sounds dire, I know. Maybe I’ve let my fear run away with me, but maybe I haven’t. I’m not a person with a lot of courage. In fact, I’m a complete, total, utter coward if you want to know the truth. Every night battles go on under my window—I hear more thudding right now—but I don’t get involved. How in world would I be able to do anything anyway? I’m big but not strong and...and like I say, born at the wrong moment.

I would be doing so much better as a peasant in the 17th century. I know, it was a hard life then, I’m not romanticizing it. Well, maybe a little. But at least they got to spend a lot of time outdoors even if it was digging potatoes most of the time. And I would trade indoor plumbing for being able to go for a stroll without being assaulted, any day.

    Wouldn’t you?

I’m out of food. I could order in, but I’ve been doing that a lot lately and it’s eating into my paltry bank account, so I’m determined to leave my apartment and face the street. Plus, I like to eat, and I’ve got a hankering for this baked ziti my mom used to make, all creamy and cheesy with delicious chunks of sausage. There’s a grocery store on my block so it’s not like I have to go very far—that should be manageable, right?

It’s springtime so I can’t wear my winter gear which feels like a sort of disguise. It’s too hot for that. So I put on a skirt and a sleeveless blouse, just like it’s the olden days before the paranormals took over, and hope for the best. I’ve heard the shifters in particular like voluptuous women, so I can’t say I feel secure, but it’s not like I can hide my curves anyway, you know?

Like practically everything in this forlorn city, the elevator is out of service. I’m on the third floor so it’s not too terrible—the worst part is being in the stairwell by myself, where the sound
