About this ebook

As small business owners we often find ourselves caught between a rock and a hard place. We know we need help but don’t have the time to find it and so we call on the nearest “we can solve all your problems” consulting type company and hope, after recovering from paying the bill, that the quick fix solution has resolved our long term problem and we can get back to our busy days.

But what if there is a longer-term solution that we could consider?

What if we could find someone with a lifetime of business or personal experiences who is prepared to share this knowledge with us – and not even charge for it!

I have been fortunate throughout my working career to having been exposed, either formally or informally, to mentors whether as a corporate employee or as a home and micro business owner. For the last 6 years, I have had the privilege as a mentor, to be able to share this knowledge and expertise with many new entrepreneurs as they begin the Start-up phase of their business ventures

WHO SHOULD READ THIS BOOK?

The book is for anyone who may be interested in finding out what mentoring and being mentored entails. However, it has specifically been designed for use by the home or small business owner and begins at the moment when he or she first comes to the realisation that the business, or they as the owner, are in need of help.

And by the way, needing help is not defined as “my business is sinking”.

WHAT TOPICS ARE COVERED?

Although I profess to be reasonably time management proficient, I still struggle to meet the daily demands of running a home or small business.
I wrote this “one stop, step by step” ebook with these time constraints in mind and with the hope that when a small business owner is confronted with a problem it will not be necessary to spend hours, days and even weeks trying to get to grips with what “mentoring” is all about.

The book is divided into 2 distinct parts.

Part 1 begins with a brief overview of the origins and history of mentoring, relating the influences of Homer, Telemachus and Mentor (who could possibly have been a woman!). It will then take the reader through an introductory insight into traditional mentoring, including: what mentoring is about, the difference between mentoring and conventional training, where you would normally find a mentor and explores the benefits of being mentored and how it generally assists business owners.

Part 2 is a detailed breakdown of each step in the process of finding the right mentor and how to engage with them in order to get the relationship established. A synopsis of what this part covers is as follows.

Understanding why you need a mentor and not, for example, a business coach;
How to identify your own criteria which you would use as a benchmark in identifying your ideal mentor;
It will discuss the various options that are available when sourcing a mentor and how you would determine which option is most suitable for your circumstances;
A whole section is devoted to how to prepare for your first engagement and subsequent face-to-face meeting with prospective mentors;
This is followed by recommendations on what is the best way to evaluate and eventually select the best mentor;
Then of course you need to understand what actually happens during a mentoring relationship and you will be taken through both examples and role-play to get a better understanding of this crucial step.
And finally, when your objectives have been successful achieved, it is time to end the relationship. I will show how to do this amicably, even if the relationship has been a total disaster!

Being mentored should be viewed as a continuous learning experience and there is nothing in the rulebook which says you can only have one mentor. I continue to be both teacher and learner and stay in constant contact with several mentors who continue to influence my business career.

I am the owner of several small and home based companies operating throughout southern Africa and based in Johannesburg, South Africa. I left the corporate world almost 15 years ago to start up my first small business which Incidentally was a total disaster. Years later and very much the wiser my later forays have been more successful. Most of my time is spent mentoring and coaching new home and micro business owners through their start-up phases. More recently, I have been involved with helping young folks from disadvantaged communities turn their dreams into realities as young entrepreneurs. Not only self-rewarding but a tremendous learning experience for me. With all the exposure I have gained over the years in mentoring other small business owners, I thought it was time to share what I had learned in the hope of answering the many questions business owners have when it comes to trying to find help. This has resulted in my first eBook – How to be Mentored, a Guide for Home and Small Business owners. I also post regularly on my website with what I hope are enjoyable but more importantly, informative tips, suggestions and experience sharing posts. I am also reasonably active on LinkedIn, Facebook and Google Plus.
