Before getting started, let’s review a few notes that are common to my writings…
*This work mostly uses British spelling, except for the quoted material, which mainly employs U.S. spelling.
*The ALT3 distinguishes between singular and plural second-person pronouns by means of an asterisk (*).
*Divine pronouns are normally not capitalized, unless they appear that way in Bible versions or other quotes.
*The terms LORD, GOD, and Hashem are all ways to describe the personal name of God, also rendered as Yahweh or Jehovah.
*Words that appear in brackets within quotes are not found in the original texts, and were added by the translators or are my personal comments, etc.
I. Introduction
Theodore Dalrymple (Anthony Daniels), a retired psychiatrist who spent much of his career among the humble and needy, aptly summarized the nullity of Western culture’s attitude towards reproof in his memorable essay, Rush from Judgment
…
Experience has taught me that it is wrong and cruel to suspend judgment, that non-judgmentalism is, at best, indifference to the suffering of others, and, at worst, a disguised form of sadism. How can one respect people as members of the human race unless one holds them to a standard of conduct and truthfulness? How can people learn from experience unless they are told that they can and should change? One doesn’t demand of laboratory mice that they do better: but man is not a mouse, and I can think of no more contemptuous way of treating people than to ascribe to them no more responsibility than such mice.
In any case, non-judgmentalism is not really non-judgmental. It is the judgment that, in the words of a bitter Argentinean tango, ‘todo es igual, nada es mejor’: everything is the same, nothing is better.
This is as barbaric and untruthful a doctrine as has yet emerged from the fertile mind of man.¹
A dank attitude of non-judgmentalism
is dangerous when it comes to theology. In having an ecumenical outlook we can be merely helping to condemn people eternally in the name of present pleasantness.
Don’t get me wrong; I believe it’s possible to belong to any church, to any denomination—or even to none at all—and yet still have come to a saving knowledge of salvation by grace alone through repentance and faith alone in the God-man Jesus Christ alone. I believe it’s even possible to arrive at this knowledge
