Raw Food for Children - Kytka Hilmar-Jezek

    The Beginning of our Journey

The focus of this book is on the growing movement towards eating only raw or living foods. Raw food has become very popular these days and for some very good reasons, several of which I will address in this book. I will also discuss how one should start to consume raw food for a healthy raw food diet.

Consuming raw food could change your life for the better, more importantly is that it can improve your child’s health and prepare him for the very best future of wellness and self-care.

I have been on all parts of the food spectrum. When I wrote this book, we had been eating a 100% raw food diet for over four years and we have never felt better. My children are strong and growing, full of energy.

We chose this diet for ourselves because it feels good for our bodies, it tastes good and it fits in with our lifestyle. We feel good and that is what is best for OUR family. I have never forced it on my children. They ask for raw foods and are happier with fruit than with a large Thanksgiving dinner. They like being able to eat ice cream and pudding all day and are tickled pink that while other kids eat their salads, we drink ours.

The reason we started to consider a raw food diet is that we naturally made the progression from vegetarianism to veganism, and, in trying to acquire information about that way of living and eating, we came across information about raw food. When I first got to know about this way of eating I thought that it was just so profound and it made such sense to me.

I started to buy all the books that I could in order to read them. The very first book I came across was Nature’s First Law. What is interesting about that book is that it ends every chapter with Cooked food is poison. I really needed to pause when I read that line. Many people that I have met since then react very strongly to that, and looking back now, I see that that’s a very strong statement.

I remember after I read the book my husband and I were very excited and we thought, This is it, this is true, this is how everything works - cooked food is poison; we have to throw out our pots and pans! I immediately ran to my mother’s house and I said, The food you’ve been giving my children is evil. No more potatoes!

We got very caught up in the message of that book and we started to implement some very serious changes. One of those changes was contacting our families and telling them about this new way we had discovered and how we were making immediate and radical changes. Looking back now I think that was very irresponsible. In retrospect, it was quite damaging to the big picture and to our journey as a whole. I think it would have been much wiser if perhaps we just let the people know how excited we were to be adding more raw living foods into our diet.

Most people are very set in their dietary habits and beliefs. I believe that what we eat is very much a part of who we are and the way culture sees us. It is an identity for many of us, and unless we really focus on that concept, we are unaware of it. It touches the very core of the way society operates: people meet and we eat together. It’s not just about food, it is all about connecting, and it is about community. It’s about all these other things that come into play. That’s why it’s such a powerful issue and one which is usually met with strong argument, especially one’s parents and close family.

Something that I hear is, Well, if it’s so great why I haven’t heard about it before? Why isn’t it in the news? Why isn’t it on the cover of Time magazine? I think that the key there is, that there’s nothing really to market or sell when you’re trying to promote this way of eating. Some people I’ve discussed this with come into it with, What’s the catch? I’m leery of schemes that try to convert me into something totally outrageous. Why hasn’t it been introduced to me before and why isn’t it in the mainstream?

I think it’s just the medium of marketing. Marketing is on TV, marketing is in magazines. These things that we are being sold are all created around a product. Most people who are naturopaths or homeopaths or who have fasting clinics or who are the organic farmers are not putting out ads because they don’t have the budgets and they really don’t have the need to go on national TV or to make the cover of Time magazine to advertise.

What I do find interesting is that since the news broke of GMOs and genetically modified and altered foods, we have been seeing a number of commercials and ads for fresh fruits and vegetables. Here money is to be made, something is to be sold. These people putting out these super veggies; it’s a product to them. They want to sell their tomatoes that are going to be able to sit on the shelf for 15 days. They’re corporate people who are really focused on making money for their corporations.

We have become a society so far removed from our natural state of being that to isolate and to understand specific needs is a very difficult and time-consuming task. Many variables are involved when you’re making this type of a decision for your lives and your children’s lives. It’s so frustrating when you’re being bombarded with commercials and media that are trying to tell you something else. You have to create a protective zone around yourself and around your children and you need to get into a space where the information that you have gathered is valid and you believe in it. We need to build up a little support system inside of ourselves because we are literally overwhelmed with commercialism, selling us something that is not natural, something that’s not the best for our physical being and for our lives.

I wanted in this book to discuss raw foods just from my experience with my own family going back and forth on the journey, falling down stumbling upon it, picking us back up, trying and learning.

The best advice is within the facts you are encouraged to seek out and this book, I believe, for true support and peace of mind.

    Being Vegetarian

The longer I have been on the raw food path, the more I tend to come full circle and return to where my original ideas and inspiration of wanting to eat raw food come from - and that’s natural hygiene and its principles.

The foundation of natural hygiene goes back four hundred years. I’ve found writings from the 16th and 17th century discussing the proper foods that should be going into the human organism and I think that a core principle underlying natural hygiene and its principles and beliefs is a vegetarian diet.

I believe this because veganism, vegetarianism and raw foods are connected to a higher level of consciousness and awareness. A diet which is based on primarily raw foods is the ultimate diet for a heightened consciousness and awareness.

You may argue, But meat eating is ‘natural’...

What does it mean for something to be natural? When we say that something is natural, what we often actually mean is that it is widely accepted or practiced, whereas something that is unnatural is foreign or strange to us. Michael Allen Fox notes that, Many things are justified merely on the grounds of being ‘natural’ (greed, war, heterosexuality), and many are condemned on the equally flimsy pretext of being ‘unnatural’ (altruism, pacifism, homosexuality). Clearly, the fact that something is supposedly natural is not a valid justification for anything, and thus cannot in itself be used to justify meat-eating or cooked food eating or anything else, for that matter.

Many people are sympathetic to the cause of vegetarianism, veganism and the raw food diet, and may even wish to become vegetarian, vegan or raw, but complain that they lack the willpower or motivation to make the shift. Often this is because they feel, or claim to feel, that the choices they make will not have a significant impact on the suffering of the animals or on the environment. This belief, however, need not be true.

The choices that a single person makes about the way he or she wishes to live life can have an incredible impact on the world on many levels, most importantly, on the person adapting the diet and his or her family. When one individual makes a clear choice and lives according to that choice, other people will notice and begin to examine the way in which they lead their own lives. In the end, it will always be individual choice that brings about important changes in the world.

Our journey as human beings on this earth is to gain a deeper understanding of our relationship with our environment, our health, ourselves, and our community.

We share this earth with soil, plants and animals. When we are awake to this thought, we gain a broader view of our relationship with and place in the world. We gain insight into how we can contribute to both our own well-being and that of our environment.

All life on this earth is interconnected, in a physical as well as a spiritual and cosmic sense.

The wonderful thing about being a human being is that we have the opportunity and the sense to choose, and that we do all make different choices.

Some of us spend much time researching or experimenting, others seem more to choose from habit or ease. But no matter how and what we choose, the fact is that it is our choice to make, and as fellow human beings, we should not pass judgment on those who make different choices. On the contrary, we should hope to gain a broader understanding of our fellow man by striving to educate ourselves about the choices they make and why.

In light of a spiritual or religious view, it has been my experience that the people who are
