About this ebook
The play was highly successful and it became an extraordinary example of Restoration comedy. Through that play, Behn earned a fair amount of money. She used to receive the proceeds from the box office every third night. The play dramatically changed her financial situation.
One of the major characters, Willmore, who may be a parallel to Charles II or John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester, became a very popular character. After the success of this play, the author was greatly inspired to write a sequel to the play.
It is said that even King Charles II liked the play ‘The Rover.’ He even had a private showing of the play organized for him.
