    The players eight- year- old Ally Mayberry was watching on television were good.

    Really good.

    Ally had played some tennis before so she knew what she was watching. She and her best friend PJ played sometimes on the courts next to the playground in Ally’s neighborhood. The game reminded her of table tennis, something she really loved to play. Her family had a table in the garage.

    Can we go play tennis today?

    Ally’s father was home today. Normally, he worked out of town and Ally didn’t get to see him much during the week. When he was home, the two tried to do as many activities together as possible.

    Tennis?

    Really?

    Sure, Ally said. PJ and I have played before. It’s not that difficult. I think you’d like it.

    Ally’s father laughed.

    I’ve played tennis before, Ally, he said. Your mother and I used to play a lot before you came along.

    It’s pretty much just like ping pong, Ally said.

    Table tennis, her father corrected. It’s actually called table tennis and yes, I guess it is a lot alike. Of course, it would be like playing table tennis . . . except you’d be standing on the table.

    It was Ally’s turn to laugh.

    That’s silly, she said.

    So . . . can we play later today?

    I guess so, he said. Why don’t you ask your mother, also? She enjoys playing and she’s pretty good at it. We can make it a family day.

    Can I invite PJ?
