About this ebook

When Lady Eleanor Sotheby unexpectedly enters the life of Jayne Clark, a 23-year old waitress from Wichita, Kansas, Jayne's world is turned upside down. Not only is she welcomed into a family that she never knew, but she is thrust headlong into the highest strata of European society. Nothing is too grand in the fairy tale lives of the uber-rich--the spectacular seaside villas, the sleek, chauffeured limousines, the outrageously expensive designer clothes. When Jayne plays her part and learns to fit into this new world, she meets Robert Astor, the man of her dreams. But her feelings for Robert are forbidden. Jayne's heady new life begins to unravel into a dark web of deceit, domination and greed...and she ultimately finds herself confronting an evil that truly has no limits.

    Chapter 3.1

Jayne felt dizzy. If she hadn’t been sitting—and if her mother’s grip on her knees hadn’t been as firm as a vice—she would have sunk to the floor.

The dingy little room in the guest house where her mother and heavily pregnant twin sister were hiding out seemed to be spinning round and round.

Bits of Eleanor’s last few sentences echoed in her head.

The wedding date is less than three weeks away, and according to our doctor, Celeste won’t have the baby in time to go to the wedding. Herself. I don’t see any other alternative, Jayne. You’re going to have to pose as Celeste at the weddingyou’re going to have to go on the honeymoon with Robert and act as his wife for a couple of weeks, until after your sister has the baby and can step in and take over.

Jayne couldn’t have been more shocked if Eleanor had literally dropped a ticking bomb into her lap. There was a deafening roar inside her head, drowning everything else out. At the same time, the words rang clearer than clear in her mind, cutting like many-edged knives.

Things went blissfully black for a moment.

    Jayne? Jayne!

From somewhere far away, she heard two frantic voices calling her name. With a colossal effort, Jayne tried to fight her way back to consciousness, although she didn’t want to escape the lulling blackness that made her comfortably numb.

When she finally came to her senses, she realized Eleanor was kneeling in front of her, one insistent hand tapping against her cheek while the other gripped her shoulder and shook it.

Are you all right, dear? her mother asked, ceasing to shake her.

    No.

You should drink some water, Eleanor said, rising.

Jayne spoke again before she could get up. No.

Her mother gave a puzzled frown. No?

That’s my answer. That’s my answer to everything! No.

Eleanor and her sister exchanged a glance. Celeste sat up farther in the bed. What do you mean?

Jayne suddenly felt centered and full of resolve, and she was thinking clearer than she ever had in her life. No, I’m not going to stand in for you at the wedding, and no, I’m not going on the honeymoon with Robert. She stood up. I’m going to tell him everything.

    Celeste gasped.

She’s fallen in love with him! Celeste cried out. And slept with him—I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!

    Jayne cringed.

Celeste hissed, You selfish, backstabbing bitch! With surprising speed, Celeste rolled off the bed and stepped toward Jayne, her enormous size suddenly not looking ridiculous but threatening.

    Eleanor stepped between them.

I told you, didn’t I, Mother? Celeste screamed. She wants Robert for herself!

Sssh! Eleanor said. Do you want to wake up everyone in this building!

Celeste didn’t give her any time to react. Moving her face so close that they were nose to nose, she accused, You have slept with Robert, haven’t you? Haven’t you!

Jayne froze like a panicked deer in the headlights of a speeding truck. Her throat went dry, and her heart raced, while for a second a memory of lying in Robert’s arms shook her to the core.

When she didn’t answer, Celeste rightly took that as a yes and lost the last bit of control. She shrieked, You scheming little whore! I knew it! You couldn’t wait to spread your legs when a real man showed you a bit of admiration for the first time in your life! How could you!

Eleanor tried to hold her at bay, but there was hardly room for the three of them to stand up together in the small bedroom. Out of the blue, Celeste ducked under her mother’s arm and lunged at Jayne. She clawed viciously at Jayne’s face.

Jayne ducked reflexively and felt a long, sharp nail scratch her cheek, narrowly missing her eye.

The next moment, Eleanor caught hold of Celeste’s arm, shouting at her. Stop it, right now, get a grip on yourself! You’re in no state to fight! Stop it before I slap some sense into you!

All at once, Celeste slumped and started crying, leaning against her mother for support. "But…don’t you see what that bitch has done? She slept with my Robert! She…I…do something, Mother!"

Eleanor rolled her eyes and separated from her. So what if she has? You knew this could happen. Now stop acting like a child.

    But—

    Sit!

Celeste looked astounded that her mother would not side with her. She let herself be gently set back down on the bed. She alternated between shooting daggers at Jayne and sending pleading puppy dog looks to her mother.

Eleanor ran a hand back through her own hair, which looked uncharacteristically disheveled, and glanced at Celeste. For the fraction of a second, Jayne thought she could see a mask break and reveal a tumult of emotions behind the calm, assured façade her mother was always presenting. The next instant, the hint of the storm was gone.

Eleanor stepped forward, put her hand on Jayne’s shoulder, and firmly guided Jayne back down into the chair.

I’m sorry, dear, I shouldn’t have sprung all this on you so suddenly. You’re upset and you’re not thinking clearly. This must have been a hell of a day for you, with Robert showing up at the villa completely by surprise. You’ll feel better tomorrow.

I will not ‘feel better’ tomorrow. I refuse to participate in this charade for even one more day. I… Jayne started to say that she was going to tell Robert everything, but changed her mind, Eleanor’s intimidating gaze boring into her. I’m going back to Kansas first thing in the morning. You two can do whatever you want. I’ve made up my mind to end my participation in this scheme and nothing will change it.

Eleanor nodded a few times. She moved to the desk to pick up her phone and purse. I understand how you feel, Jayne, but I urge you to sleep on this and not make any hasty decisions while you’re so upset. It’s bad practice. She turned to Celeste. Darling, get dressed. We’re going back to the villa. You’re wide awake now and there’s no reason to spend the night in this dreary place.

    Chapter 3.2

Late the next morning, Jayne was staring at herself in the bathroom mirror.

Surprisingly, she had slept dreamlessly for hours, like a corpse.

After dropping into bed like a stone, she had tossed and turned for a long time. The horror
